Mt. Rushmore of Nats

Zimmerman
Strasburg
Scherzer

Who is the 4th?  Harper clearly will go down in history as a Philly, so I have a hard time putting him up there.  Soto?  His tenure in Washington will be a footnote in 10 years.  I might have to go Rendon.  He had his best years in DC and to me, was the best player on our World Series team.

Are we counting Expos and the Senators?

Agree but he would refuse to have his face there.

Good clarification.  No, just Washington era, 2005 - present.

Zimmmermann had some great (at least by the standards of the early Nats) seasons

To heck with Mount Rushmore. I'm thinking more of a Crazy Horse Monument with Werth on his horse.

He's ruined his reputation since leaving the Nats but it easily is Anthony Rendon. In 6 full seasons with the Nats he was in the top 11 in MVP voting 4 times. He had a monster year in 2019, his walk year so maybe that was a hint of things to come.

had a terrific 2020 for the Angels before things fell apart physically and his attitude started to get in the way of his career.

Harper's on his way to a terrific career, but I think the long run debate about the best players ever to appear for Washington baseball will Josh Gibson and Juan Soto. Soto stays healthy, he's in the inner circle of the best hitters ever. There's a reason he had those Ted Williams comps.

Walter Johnson and Josh Gibson are the beginning and the end of the debate. Soto needs a decade long run to even be in the conversation

If only talking the Washington Nationals current iteration, I am going Rendon - Scherzer - Strasburg - Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, Scherzer, Strasburg are easy. Then it is hard.

I wanted to say Bryce Harper, but he didn't win a championship. So, it obviously is Juan Soto, right? His fWAR for Nats is less than Turner.

It has to be Rendon. Second all time in fWAR for Nats hitters behind Ryan Zimmerman. Champion. I'm not convinced the Nats even pull out of their depths in 2019 without Rendon raking.

Go look at Anthony Rendon stats as a Nat. You definitely remember he is good, you don't remember how really good he was. And the fact he's become at times irritating off the field doesn't change the fact he is really darn good.

Yeah, Max, Stras, and RZ are locks. I'd also go with Rendon.

Best player ever to appear in a Washington baseball uniform has to be Walter Johnson. 417 wins wow. I think he's also had the most shutouts of any pitcher ever and the most 1-0 wins and 1-0 losses.

My favorite; Don Lock.

Livo

Yes.

Wasn't his fault the Lerners dumped his salary in 2006.  Stan Kasten's high praise of even then mediocre prospects Garrett Mock and Matt Chico returned for Livo was the first clear sign the team had been bought by lowlifes.  Not just people who were cheap, but who would refuse to spend modest amounts of money on an important player, and then use their frontman to cover it up with PR nonsense in a sad attempt to fool the fans.

I was focused on hitters. Best ever to play in Washington? Probably Johnson, but Gibson is what, the all-time leader in average, slugging, and OPS? Arguably the best hitter in baseball ever.  Johnson is on the short list of best pitcher ever, and he did it for such a long time, so yes, he's on the DC Rushmore, no question.  My point was more about Soto and Gibson, both made / will make most of their rep out of town, but were huge when they were here.

As for the Nats Rushmore, I think I leave the 4th slot open and go ZZ Top / The Who and just leave it at 3. Picking among Harper, Soto, Turner, and Rendon is hard. Gun to my head, I'd say Rendon.

This is Soto's 7th year in the majors already. Only a few years away from reaching that decade long run of dominance.
