Sunday, 1:05 p.m. ET -- Rochester (WSH) @ Syracuse (NYM)
In the final matchup of Triple-A Opening Weekend, MLB's No. 14 prospect James Wood and the Red Wings line up against Drew Gilbert (MLB No. 53), Luisangel Acuña (MLB No. 66) and the Mets. Wood is fresh off slugging four homers with a .364/.509/.705 slash line this spring, proving his 70-grade power tool isn't just for show. Wood, listed at 6-foot-6, 234 pounds, is light-tower power personified. For Syracuse, Gilbert and Acuña act as poster boys for New York's revamped farm system. Both coming over at the Trade Deadline last year, the duo brings a dynamic brand of baseball to the Mets affiliate that is sure to be on display Sunday. Gilbert tallied six big flies and a .984 OPS for the Rumble Ponies after coming over from Houston at the Deadline, while Acuña flashed his elite speed with 57 stolen bases in '23.

Friday, March 29

First Rochester game today, 2:05 pm. After yesterday, I'm hoping Rochester and Harrisburg are the teams to watch.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre @ Buffalo/Rochester @ Syracuse, 2:05 p.m. ET: Bundle up! The first two games of the 2024 Minor League season will be played concurrently in Buffalo and Syracuse, two Empire State locales that aren’t exactly known for temperate spring weather. Both the Bisons and the Mets are acknowledging -- even celebrating -- this reality, by giving away an ice scraper and a winter hat respectively.

In terms of prospects, Buffalo is sending out top Blue Jays prospect Ricky Tiedemann (MLB's No. 29 overall) as its Opening Day starter. The 21-year-old left-hander has three plus pitches in his fastball, slider and changeup that could all play in the Majors right away, and he could dominate out of the gate for the Bisons. For Rochester, No. 2 Nationals prospect James Wood (No. 14 overall) looks to build on his Spring Training momentum by showing off his plus-plus power and impressive speed from the heart of the Red Wings lineup.

is it worth setting up separate Rochester, Harrisburg, Wilmington, and Frederick threads, or just jumble them all here? Last year we had both a general minors thread as well as separate ones for each full-season team. I'm not sure if that was good or bad. WE had a total of 250 posts on those 4 team threads, most just 3 pages, with 98 being the most active and Wilmington with just 19.

For now, let's ride with one thread.

it didn't seem like the team threads got much in the way of activity last year but happy to set up separate threads. The minors are probably going to get a lot of attention this year.

I suppose one active thread stickied to the top beats 4 threads with only a couple moderately active.

Only the 5th, but today was not the day. Young and Wood are both 0-for-3. Losing 6 - 1, with two hits. Wood just stuck out by Reed Garrett, who pitched for the Nats system in 2022.

Kieboom is 2-4 so far, plus an error.
Wood hit a double.

Missed the first inning.  Rochester leads 1-0.  Young and Wood with singles and Alu with an RBI double.  Thad Ward on the mound.

Pretty good video and audio from the Syracuse Mets.  Ji Man Choi playing for them. Looks brisk.

I don’t see a Thad Ward thread.  Syracuse announcers having a weird discussion about his name sounding like a founding father and then wanting to know which colony he would have been from.  Virginia won.

Bringing to mind all of those founding fathers that were called Thad or named Ward, that is, none that come to mind. Maybe they were thinking about Montgomery Ward?

I think it was the Thaddeus that tricked them.  Old school name.  But not 1770s I suppose.

well, he's no longer a rookie, which is the usual cut for a"prospect" status. He's just a major leaguer who has been sent down. That said, we can set up a "Not a prospect" thread. We have a few of those for Matt Adams and some others.

Rochester beat the Syracuse Mets today, 7 - 2. Rutledge pitched well.

Makes total sense to play early April games up north.

If the Nationals could eventually swing a deal with Richmond which is working on a new ballpark, that would seem to make optimal logistical sense

Rochester's social media accounts are having some fun today. They are currently playing tic-tac-toe with the Lehigh Valley Twitter account.
