Boswell Article on "Refreshing" Nats
« on: August 22, 2023, 06:16:56 pm »
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/08/21/nationals-dave-martinez-contract-extension/

I didn't see this posted anywhere.  Nice article mentions how the Nats have implemented much of what they need to do to compete again, starting with trading stars Soto/Turner/Scherzer/Bell for major contributors/possible future stars such as Gray/Gore/Ruiz/Abrams.  He notes that in such trades, you need to land a star of the future, which he says is "probably" Wood.  You need to "nail" your first round picks when your team is horrible, and he says the Nats have done that with two out of three recently (Crews and House, missed on Green).  Finally, he says you must steal some talent for "next to nothing", such as Thomas, Adams, Meneses, Garrett, Finnegan, Harvey and Weems.  He says that Rizzo should keep/extend Thomas, and give Garrett "plenty of chances to show whether he belongs".  He makes the obvious point that Rizzo should sign or trade for more starting pitching to continue the rebuild.

I would feel much better if the ownership situation was settled.

Box's article could go on the Sunshine thread. Some of his points are a little bit not fully analyzed (he cherry picks his numbers with the best), but he's onto something about signing a starting pitcher. Could be a vet short term, like Lynn or Stroman, but there are others we've talked about - maybe Urias - that you could go longer term. Corbin's contract is over this next year, so it's not a bad time to reinvest.
