The OF Glut

Our OF depth in the minors is kind of crazy right now:

Here's a list of the top guys in the system and their expected arrival year (via MLB Pipeline)

Top Guys:
- Wood (2024)
- Crews (no date yet, but probably 2024)
- Pickney (no date yet, but probably 2024-25)
- Vaquero (2027)
- Green (2026)
- Hassell (2024)

Fringe guys:
- Lile (2025)
- De La Rosa (2024)
- TJ White (2025)
- Quintana (2025)
- McKenzie (2025)
- Acevedo (2028)

So the 2024 OF probably looks something like it does now on OD, but by August you could have Thomas/Crews/Wood with Hassell on the bench. Green could potentially replace Thomas in 2026 with Vaquero knocking on the door as well. I would not rule out Crews manning CF on OD 2024.

It will be interesting to see who gets traded for SP / RP help.

True but had a great first half. For his first experience of full season ball, after a full year off, I think its been a productive year so far.

I think we have discussed before here and the consensus was the MLB dates for arrival are usually overly optimistic.  Wood is not coming in 2024. Maybe Crews but not much incentive to rush service time starting on these guys.  Probably not Hassell either given his 2023.

A lot of these guys won't make it, but Pinckney alone could make things interesting if he races through the system.   Will be interesting to see how he does in Harrisburg because low A could be a small step down from where he was in the SEC, not to mention he's already 22.

doesn't turn 21 until November. If him and White need to consolidate for a year at Wilmington, that's fine. Doesn't have to be added to the 40 man roster until after 2025.  Still plenty of time.

Just looking at some of the batted ball and contact stats, the Ks have not skyrocketed, the GB/FB ratios are nearly constant, but the BABIP has dropped dramatically to .244 from .347. The old "he might have been a bit lucky but no way he's not unlucky now." Only other thing in his profile I can see is he's less up the middle and a bit more pull and oppo.

Both Crews and Wood will be in Washington at some point in '24. Pretty certain by the all star break at the latest, for both.

The rest, sure. They don't have the talent ans/or are further away. Hard to say hiw the development will go. But Wood and Crews will be in the bigs in '24.

I think that is a good guess with Crews given his age. Wood will have to learn to hit Double A pitching first. His K rate is way up at that level.  No reason to push him fast.  Will just be turning 21 next month.

This isnt a problem. You just trade one of them for pitching.

Can totally see James Wood headlining a deal for Logan Gilbert during the 2024 offseason
