Crews is 2-2, with a 2B and HR so far today, all of Jesus Lozardo.

Rumors of his demise.....

here's the HR to right-center:

I'm not worried about Dylan Crews, but Wyatt Langford, picked #4 last year out of U Florida, has clearly gotten off to a much better professional start.

I fear that Crews is just a guy and Langford is a real talent...

I fear that Crews is just a guy and Langford is a real talent...

Langford could be elite.  He's put up the same 1.000-1.200 OPS numbers at A, AA, AAA, and now Spring Training.  He's also not Boras like Crews, though with Crews' spring not forcing any decision to hurry him up to DC, he'll at least be a Nat through his age 28 season.

Another advantage Langford has is not being exposed to the bizarre hitting philosophy of this org that tries to make the opposing pitcher's life as easy as possible. Who knows how Nats coaching could potentially mess up Crews.

2023 / 2024 Spring Training Recap

Age: 22
Team rank: 1
Current level: AA

2023 (3 levels): .292/.377/.467 .845 OPS, 5 HR, 4 SB (159 PA)
2023 position (games played): 27 CF, 4 RF, 2 LF

2024 Spring Training: .156/.290/.313 .602 OPS, 1 HR, 2 SB (38 PA)

Dominated the rookie league and low-A ball, but struggled in AA and Spring Training. Still a consensus top-10 prospect across baseball going into the season.

somehow, we missed Golden's profile of Crews.

discusses his development as a kid, playing football and baseball, through travel ball, 100 games a year, high school, and the attention he was getting from schools before he committed to LSU as a sophomore in high school. Through junior year, there was a push for him to enter the 2020 draft, but things started to slip the summer before his senior year:

Quote
Those around Crews noticed he was faltering under pressure, too. Bob Rikeman, who runs the Scorpions, said Crews always had an energy that buoyed those around him. But that summer, he could see the emotional toll on Crews’s face. Rikeman would have scouts call him to tell him that Crews couldn’t see the ball during the day. Coaches would say he couldn’t hit at night.

[covid shut down didn't help in the spring of 2020]

“I think he was a target,” Rikeman said. “He went from being the number one rated player in the country in high school to everybody trying to find something wrong with you.”

[he eventually pulled his name out of the draft and went to LSU, going from 2d team all american, to 1st team, to golden spikes and NCAA champ]

In hindsight, Crews views what he went through as a blessing in disguise.

“You want to do it for your town and your city, to go to the draft at a young age, 18 years old. It was a tough decision to make,” Crews said. “You have to trust your gut, and that’s what I did. I wanted to go to school and take that gamble. So I did that, and everything worked out the way I wanted it to.”

Loves learning from struggling.
Quote
“I don’t know — almost like the failure part kind of draws me back into it,” he said. “This game, you’re failing all the time. I want to get better and better every day. … You do that, you turn out to make a pretty good name for yourself.”
