Follow the Prospects: Jorgelys Mota, 3B
« on: August 16, 2022, 02:20:18 pm »
Someone to keep an eye on: 17 year-old SS Jorgelys Mota, playing in the DSL. He is the first player in our system younger than the Nationals team.

Signed for $250k in 2022 as an international FA. I can't find any scouting reports, he got lost in the shade of the Vaquero signing.

.275   .351   .802, 2 HRs, 4SBs in 51 ABs. through August 16

.382   .432   .647 in 34 ABs in August.

3-4, HR, BB, SB, on August 16.

Born 6/3/2005 in Sabana Grande de Boya

Looks like he played 3rd at both the FCL and Fredericksburg last year, and mostly 3rd in the DSL the year before. Listed in Baseball Cube at 6'3" 170, so I think that there may be an expectation he gets big for SS.

Remember reading something about him in December/January around signing time cuz I’m a nerd.  Good to see he’s doing well

Why don't we have him in the master prospects thread?

Added some bio info to the opening post.

While he's listed as a SS when signed, he's been playing almost exclusively 3rd base.

Garren Ouilette at TalkNats had a profile back in 2022:
https://www.talknats.com/2022/08/27/10-radar-players-get-excited-nats-farm-system/

Quote
Early in 2022, the Nats signed SS Jorgelys Mota to a minor league contract from international free agency at 16.  The 6’3 athlete is now extremely tall for a teenager who just turned 17 in June. He is currently playing with the DSL (Dominican Summer League) Nationals. Not even technically an adult yet, he is hitting .262. With many years to grow in the Nats minor league system, watch out for Mota, because this kid has raw talent.
FWIW, the other guys in Ouillette's profile have had a high success rate - Irvin, Ferrer, Baker, Young, plus Pineda.

BA has him at #38 in our system:
Quote
38. Jorgelys Mota, SS

Mota had a great showing in 28 games at the complex level, however he struggled at Low-A. He was shut down for the month of September when he found himself on the IL.

Wanted to start tracking Mota after seeing him included in Fangraphs' top prospects list for the Nationals where he came in at #29 with a 35+ FV:

Quote
Mota signed for $250,000 in 2022 and had two strong statistical seasons to start his career, including a .296/.381/.439 line in 2023. He was sent back to the complex to begin 2024 and isn’t off to a great statistical start, but the tools and athleticism from last season are still here. Mota has filled out quite a bit since he was a contact-oriented amateur shortstop with a lovely swing. He’s much thicker in the lower body and has moved to third base, where his hands are inconsistent but his bend and actions are sensational. Mota swings hard for a player his age and is among the system’s leaders in hard-hit rate early in 2024, but strikeouts have been lurking below the surface while he has performed on the complex and he’s being punished more for them now. He’s a power-hitting sleeper near the bottom of the system, with early-career hit tool red flags preventing a heftier FV grade.

Played 3B for Fredericksburg in Lynchburg today and looked a bit overmatched at the plate a couple times but hung tough in his other at bats and got a couple hits, one of which was luck and one of which wasn't.  Still a lot of physical projection and very, very raw both at the plate and in the field but is possibly one to watch.  That physical development will likely take him off SS permanently if that hasn't happened already, but he seems to have the arm and hands for 3B.

I understand why he's in full-season ball, but he does look exactly like a guy who just came out of complex ball for the first time.

Jorgelys Mota was named the Carolina League Player of the Week after going 8-for-22 (.364) during the games of April 15-20, including a HR, a triple, three doubles, four stolen bases, five walks, and six RBI.

Played 3B today for the FredNats when I saw them in Salem.

I think they've got something here.  Solid development, both physical and skills-wise, from when I saw him at the same level last August.  I didn't see him have to show off the arm, but he made a very nice play on the backhand on a liner and also handled a bad outfield throw very well on a cutoff, saving a base.  Potential plus runner who could also play OF, probably including CF.

Tall, still quite lanky righty hitter who isn't going to fill out enough to force a move off 3B.  Good plate coverage, and pitch recognition seems very good for a 19-year-old in full season ball.  Hits the ball hard, with his hands quick to the ball.  He won't have a ton of power yet, but I could see it developing.  I'd expect his numbers to continue to improve and him to start appearing on prospect lists midseason given his combination of age, tools, and production.  I think the Nats may agree with my views: he's hitting cleanup, which is a great sign at 19 in A ball.

Interesting report. Looking at his career stat page, it looks like he was on a good track through 2023, got a taste of A ball as a challenge, then maybe was disappointed / hurt / something when he was reassigned to the complex league in 2024. That's where he absolutely stunk for 43 games, but got bumped up to F-burg and had OK numbers to finish the year (29 games).

My impression is F-burg has a lot of SS candidates. IDK if playing 3rd is due to a need (lack of skill) to move him off SS or whether it's due to  the depth at A and the desire to have him play somewhere and keep him in the lineup.

He's a 3B now.  Hasn't played SS in several years per game logs.

Updated the FTP title to 3B, thanks Elvir!

Hit his 3rd HR last night in Fredrickburg's blowout win, but also struck out 4 times.
