This morning -- 6:51am -- Steve Cohen twittered his fury that Steven Matz signed with the Cardinals. "I've never seen such unprofessional behavior in an agent..." Apparently, Stevie expected Matz's agent to give the Mets the final bid.

In the wake of Steven Matz signing with the St. Louis Cardinals without giving the Mets a final chance to match or exceed the offer, Steve Cohen took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to voice his displeasure.

"I’m not happy this morning," Cohen tweeted. "I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a player’s agent. I guess words and promises don’t matter."

Mets GM Billy Eppler told Matz's agent, Rob Martin, that he was upset at how things unfolded, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Per Heyman, the Mets believed they would have a "final chance" to match an offer received by Matz elsewhere and didn't get it.

The explanation from Matz's side, according to Heyman, is that Matz had "a late change of heart."

Quote
Earlier this offseason, Noah Syndergaard did not give the Mets a chance to match the offer he received from the Los Angeles Angels before he signed there for one year and $21 million, rejecting the Mets' one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer in the process.

A few days ago, the Mets did not match the two-year, $17 million deal Aaron Loup agreed to with the Angels, instead opting to focus their resources on adding multiple starting pitchers.

And with Matz now off the board, the Mets' search for starters continues.

Dear Stevie,

Not sure why I have to explain this to a hedge fund manager,  but money talks and everything else walks. How does it feel to be lied to and used? freak you.

Sincerely and respectfully,

I saw the Mets will still be paying Bonilla after wander Franco’s deal ends.

It was a great deal when the Wilpons could put the money in an investment account guaranteed to grow 10% a year

payroll up to $268 million for next year, still under the $275M luxury tax threshold.

It's going to suck when they go 82-80 and miss the playoffs.

If deGrom is healthy that’s a very good rotation. If healthy of course.

A healthy DeGrom / Scherzer / Carrasco > Stras / Scherzer / Corbin 2019.

Big if's though in terms of health. Carrasco last threw > 80 innings in 2018 and will be 35 next season.

I suspect the Mets aren't done hunting for starting pitching.

A healthy Carrasco is less likely than a healthy Strasburg

Saw a couple accounts that Max did indeed make his positive feelings toward Buck made known. Who doesn't like Buck?

Hate to say it but Mets and Braves will likely be at the top of the NL East for the foreseeable future.

If anyone knows the state of those two teams' farm systems, be interested in hearing those assessments.

Mets sure seem to be making some good moves this offseason.  Buck will keep it from going off the rails if the players start booing the fans again.
