JoJo Gray
« on: August 02, 2021, 10:08:55 am »
From a recent LA Times article (before the trade). Subject, Tonight's Nats SP, Josiah Gray:

"Gray has pitched 198 innings over three seasons in the minors, compiling a 14-5 record with a 2.41 ERA and 228 strikeouts. Everybody calls him JoJo.

“He’s the most humble, down to earth guy you’ll ever meet,” (his college coach) said. “Everybody is friends with him. He’s driven and focused, and he’s a pleasurable kid to root for.”

I watched his first MLB start back on July 25th against the Rockies, at Dodger Stadium. Lasted 4 IP, giving up 3 hits, 2 ER, with 6K's, 4 walks. Elias Dias took him deep for a solo HR; Story singled in the other run. Hopefully, his control is better tonight.

In his social media post he said something like “you all saw what happened the last time I got traded”. I like his gusto

Think Gray was talking about him going from a "project" to a top prospect once he left the Reds farm and entered the vaunted Dodgers "development system."

Speaking of that, exactly what does LA have/do to just continually have the capacity to churn out top prospects? Year after year after year.  And to have so many that they (unlike us) can easily withstand using those prospects freely as really valuable trade chips.  It can't ALL just be money.

They spend money on both analytics and scouting, and they have a GM who embraces both

Friedman did this with no budget with the Rays.  Now he has a budget so take the rays development system and 10x it.

For all the screaming about how the Dodgers did so great at the deadline they still have to deal with signing Bauer for big money and now he is not pitching. Signing him turned out to be a major blunder. Will be funny if they have to play in the wild card game and lose it. Everyone keeps waiting for the Giants to fade but they are hanging in there.

And yet they only have as many titles the last thirty years as the Nats, Phillies, Reds, Royals.  Despite all the money spent.

They haven't been the best org in baseball that entire time, only since they hired Friedman. Now they are complete machine top to bottom with money, development, everything.

Really excited to see Gray tonight. All in on this guy. Does he go by Jojo, or is that just what you wanted to title his thread?

Wasn't Rizzo once thought of as THE very best scout in the game? Or, at least one of the very best? Is that all in the past?

Sure he signed a bunch of top draft choices (which he deserves praise for with Boras involved) but ... analytic experts/scouts "make their money" in mid to lower round picks. Yes, we lost Giolito and some other notables but should those few deals have laid total waste to our farm system as it appears to have done.

That was in the quote I took from the LA Times.

They have Max the rest of this year.  No guarantee beyond 2021 and he will be in decline anyway.  Not prime Bauer they thought they had.

They had him for one year in the first place.

Theyll have the money to get Stroman or Gausman.

Somehow, history says they'll be able to take a declining Max and even a total loss (forever) of Bauer in stride.

Yea, the Dodgers get Dustin May back next season. They'll have the payroll to go get a Marcus Stroman. Michael Busch will come in as a midseason call up and rake.

The Dodgers are incredible and have set a new standard for stocking a farm while competing. It’s really impressive.

The Nats have a rep for doing ZERO analytics, and that isn’t accurate. They’ve had an analytics team for a long time, Rizzo called them the smartest people in the organization.

I’m not posting this to get into a debate about where they are on the Scouting vs Analytics scale as clearly we are a scouting heavy organization, just sharing what I know.

So he is 23 and on his third major league team. (Reds, Dodgers, Nats)
So in mlb he has yielded 4 hrs and 6 runs in 8 innings.
