Tatis is not the worst fielding shortstop - right now, that would be Xander Bogaerts - but the occasional flashy play doesn't really make up for his bad defense. If the crowd is going to chant "MVP", it should be deservedly when he's in the batter's box, not the field.

Great play made when I saw the replay.  However you are correct about his defense.

He's a 22 year old shortstop.  He'll either get it fixed there or move to 1B longer-term post-Hosmer, 3B (a short term switch with Machado), or any of the three outfield spots for which he has the athletic ability.

Anyone suggesting he's going to be a DH any time in the next half-decade should lick a different window before writing the article.  Guys who can't stick at SS at 22 might end up at DH, but not until their 30s, and most guys keep improving at SS until their peak years.  It's the hardest non-catcher position.  Playing it well takes time.

As I noted, it is his offense that makes him one of the greatest young talents in the game. If that remains great, even if he never really fixes his defense he could stay at shortstop. Just ask Derek Jeter, who for his occasional flashy plays was also a bad defensive shortstop. A .310 career BA and over 3000 hits makes up for a lot.

Sure, but Jeter should have been moved off SS in his early 30s at the latest.  It was only ego and loyalty that kept him there.  With Tatis, there's no reason he couldn't play elite-level CF if given a year or so develop at it.  It's a legitimate solution that still preserves the value of his contract while also getting him to a position where he would be a positive on defense.  It's not that time yet, but it would come eventually.

Being an elite hitter will keep you in the lineup, but not necessarily at SS.  This process just happens in the minors for most guys when it becomes apparent they won't handle SS at the major league level.  For Tatis, that door is still open.
