They do seem to like hitching rides.

Driving up 270 today and watched a bunch of them cross the entire hightway. Like eight lanes. I mean, I don't know that they made the very last lane, but plenty of elevation.

Hello from Alaska, where I have seen more moose and bald eagles (1 each) than cicadas today. On my way out, I was surprised at how many cicadas were buzzing around the runways and tarmacs at Reagan National as we took off from there. One got very, very close to the jet engine of our plane as we pulled out of Terminal C. I suppose a cicada strike is probably less serious than a birdstrike, but I feel bad for the poor cicada saps who somehow got stranded on that vast treeless expanse.

I gather that Air Force One had some cicada issues yesterday.

...and they're gone. I spent 2 weeks in Alaska and when I returned a cicada could neither be heard nor seen in Arlington. I took a walk on a street that just two weeks ago would be swarmed with cicadas (and many dead ones on the sidewalk) and there was nothing: no buzzing, no live cicadas, no dead cicadas.

I hope we all enjoyed our time with them. 17 years is a long time, but there will be a brood in the Midwest in 2024 for those who need a quicker cicada fix.

I know some folks really didn't like them, but I thought the whole thing was amazing and very much enjoyed it.

Maybe they should run for office.  The level of intelligence and noise is pretty similar to the rest of congress.

Also, I wonder how long it takes for their eggs to hatch and for the hatchlings to start burrowing in?  Has this already happened?  Will we see any of it take place if we look for it?

People who don’t like cicadas don’t like Baby Shark either. No joyful sense of humor.

My dog has a very shiny coat and a lot of happy memories. She has, however, quickly moved on to her new favorite free range snack - fireflies.

I enjoyed them at the beginning when they warbled musically. By the end height I was getting 70 Db in the back yard. Went out for a hike with the dog in the woods today and enjoyed the quietening.

What's really sad is today was that days start getting measurably shorter tomorrow.

Also squirrels, fox, raccoons, bass, etc.  What a feeding frenzy.

Some folks are sensitive about political posts outside the politics forum :)

They're not nearly as intelligent, but they're not at all corrupt. Big improvement.

Congresspersons have a conniving, ruthless intelligence that allows them to increase their personal fortunes at an astonishing rate.

In addition, BroodX cicadas have built-in term limits. Another win.

Are you sure?

but they are similar in some ways. They often seem to spend their waking hours looking for sex with 17 year olds.
