This is getting pretty absurd with the hypotheticals.  Maybe with Donaldson, we don't lose all those games with an injured Rendon and Braves are worse and we win the division?

Bottom line for the original topic is the deferrals allowed the Lerners to be comfortable paying for a 90-100 million dollars starting rotation last year and next year, but may have cost us having Bryce or Rendon next year.   So, it's kind of a wash, we won a World Series and we're in a good spot to give it a run next year.

And lose to the Cards in the NLDS?

Disagree about being in a good spot this year. I mean, technically we werent in a good spot last year and we just lost the best player on the team.

Has anyone done an in-depth financial analysis of the deferrals, how they overlap, etc? I’d be interested in business takes also, how much they are saving by not paying everything up front.

Yea. Donaldson has never missed time due to injuries.

Not that it really matters because we're comparing Stras and Rendon, but 37-32 (.536)

Also, they had the same record with Stras as they did with Corbin. So we're probably overpaying Stras by 12 million AAV.

Rendon was in consideration for the best player in the National League. Stras wasn't even in the conversation for best player on his team.
You could argue instead that we are underpaying Corbin.

Maybe but that's kind of what makes a good GM.

What is the deal with this?

Scherzer, Strasburg, and Corbin all signed deals with deferred money.

They offered a ton of deferred money to Harper. He went on to sign for a lower AAV over more years with no deferred money.

They offered Rendon a contract with deferred money. He went on to sign a deal with no deferred money.

Is it simply greed? Do they simply like making money off other people? At this point, it can't be balancing payroll.
What does it matter if they put a winning product on the field. Yes Rendon is called, but it's a business. That's why you pay Rizzo to figure this out.

Interesting article on it.  I wonder how it will impact future spending.  The Nats paid over 13 million in 2018, but that didn't seem to stop them from spending to (accidently over) the cap.   Interesting to see that the Dodgers tried and failed the deferred approach with Cole.
