shocking news - manager treats superstar player different than other player!

Turner is the better player and the one who will be here next year.

You know, if he had simply stood there, saying it hit the plate, I'd have been okay with that. But to just throw his helmet and bat down seemed so .... immature. Defeated. I know he's slumping, but come on man.

Yeah, I agree with the benching, just bench Harper too.

sure but we are living in the real world where bryce harper has a history of being a superstar-level producer (and was just voted to an all-star team) and trea turner is still establishing himself and managers treat players differently based on their status in the majors

Yes, but most players don't know that. They think it's foul. So if he had sat there thinking he hit a foul ball, okay.

What makes you think Trea Turner, or other players, don't know that the plate is in fair territory?

I'd be willing to bet that almost no players think it's foul; only the really stupid players and Trea isn't one of them.  But he could have said he thought it hit the catcher. Or hit him, but then he would have been lying.  In any case nobody would have believed him, since he immediately dropped his bat and helmet.  Oh, he could also have said he thought there were two strikes.  Nobody would have believed that either.

You would likely be wrong. Most of the players do not understand the nuances of the rule book.

Turner said he needed a minute to gather himself after the ball came in on him.  Davey says he likely isn't playing tonight.

He remembered to toss his helmet and take off his gloves   ....   sounds good though.

The Wieters/Dusty freakup in game five - that's a nuance.  Fair/foul - not a nuance.  By the time a kids 12 (the serious ones, the ones who later are MLB players or D1 softball) he or she knows that the two bottom edges of the plate define the two foul lines and that therefore the entire home plate is fair.  I've coached kids (boys and girls) from age 7 through college. The serious ones know this by age 12.

What are you basing this on? If you know it and I know it, why would someone who plays baseball at a high level not know it. It's not like it's a hard concept to grasp: "that white thing you step up to 4 or 5 times a game is in fair territory" is not a terribly complicated concept.

He probably thought the count was 0-2 and that the ball went foul for strike 3. Of course that introduces another set of issues. :smh:

  He actually said that?

Donovan McNabb didn't know games could end in a tie in football. I'm not saying Turner didn't know that but a lot of people do believe that the plate is foul and it's not out of the realm of possibility that he would still believe that (it doesn't come into play that often).

Quote
Someone taking a sympathetic view might say that Turner didn’t run because he thought the ball was foul, but that wouldn’t explain why he decided to drop his bat and helmet at home plate and walk back to the dugout. Turner himself didn’t even reach for that excuse, telling reporters after the game that he needed a moment to gather himself because the pitch came running in on his hands, but that he should have run anyway.

Nats manager Dave Martinez told reporters that he had initially assumed that the ball had hit Turner, but was later informed that Turner had just decided not to run out the play. He added that Turner probably won’t be in the lineup for today’s game:

Donovan McNabb was one of the stupidest football players I can remember.

Actually .... if he thought the ball was foul and that there were two strikes, it perfectly explains his reaction. He thought he had struck out on a bunt attempt.

That's easy. He can't freaking hit. Again, he's slumping, hard. He probably figured he could sneak down a bunt and beat it out to first.

EXACTLY! And two outs with Wieters on deck. Not to mention, if I recall correctly, it was the second pitch of the AB. Has he checked out that he isn't aware of the freaking count!

Major leaguers all know the plate is fair.  I would argue that pretty much every player in high school ball and above know it's fair.  Teenagers in the Dominican know it's fair.  It's not an oddity to hit the ball off the plate, either on purpose to get a big bounce to leg out an infield hit, or accidentally, like when laying down a bunt.

If Turner thought he hit the plate and it was a foul ball and thus a strikeout, MLB needs to issue him a lifetime ban for being too stupid to play the game.

Even if he didn't know he shouldn't assume that the ump would make the right call. Always run. He was pissed and quit on the play.
