They will now face Justin Germano (3-0, 1.08 ERA), who is trying to win his fourth straight start for San Diego. The right-hander was called up from Triple-A Portland on May 8 to replace the injured Clay Hensley , who was activated from the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned to Portland.
Germano, who has never faced Washington, has limited opponents to a .193 batting average over his first four starts. After failing to record a decision in his first start, he has won three in a row, allowing just two earned runs through 19 innings.
The Nationals will counter with Levale Speigner (1-1, 8.39), who is trying to bounce back from his worst start of the season. The right-hander began 2007 in the bullpen before joining the rotation in mid-May to replace the injured Shawn Hill .
He has struggled in his three starts, posting a 14.81 ERA and allowing opponents to hit .442. Speigner gave up a season-high eight runs and eight hits over 3 1-3 innings in an 8-6 defeat to St. Louis on Saturday.
