At this point, two hours after scheduled first pitch, they have to have a window for playing this game. If not, it just looks silly. It looks like — and I’m not saying it is — they’re trying to sell some beers and send people home.

Maybe if they make enough in these rain delays they can offer Rendon a contract with no deferred money?

Maybe. But if you actually went to the game tonight, you deserve to be deprived of your life. Anyone who glanced at the weather app knew the game wasnt going to get played today.

Diminishing returns, every time they pull this fans get the message to avoid buying tickets ahead of time.

So if it was that obvious why didn’t they cancel earlier? I had this happen a few years ago when a friend was driving in from out of town for the game a few years ago. Flood warnings for Dc. And yet they didn’t cancel until after the scheduled game time.

Because they have to play a crap ton of these games and they don't have a lot of off days. They've already pushed one game to a double header tomorrow  (which probably will be a rain filled game). So they at least have to try and play 5 innings.

Honestly, this is the Lerners' fault for not putting a roof on the goddamned stadium in the first place.

I know, I just wanted to counter the thought that it might be a smart business move even if that wasn't really your point.

Except that it worked. They bought tickets and concessions. They'll be back for more concessions

No stadium needs a roof.   Who cares if we get a couple rainouts a season.

First off, this is bullcrap. Like old man, yell at the sky bullcrap. If you're not in, you're in the way. You old people are in the way.

The team cares if you get a rainout because they make less money. Maybe this is how they offset it, but either those people don't go to games (so no concession sales) or they go to another game, which means the team can't sell those tickets.

Baseball is experiencing increasing numbers of rainouts over the last three seasons. This problem is only going to be aggravated with the ramifications of climate change, the most significant we're seeing is more rain. This is going to cause more rainouts and the schedule is so jampacked that it will struggle to keep up with the changes.

The second biggest issue is simply the temperature. It gets uncomfortably hot in the summer time in DC. Even in the evenings, from about June to October, it's uncomfortably humid and gross outside. After about three innings, it stops being fun to sit stupidly close to two people who are also sweating, while trying to figure out how you're going to be able to afford to drink enough water/beer to stay hydrated. It's simply a miserable experience and anyone who says they enjoy it is trying to lie to themselves to justify all the money they've spent.

Just points out -- again -- how foolhardy and short-sighted any stadium construction is without a retractable roof. Not just the games cancelled but all the games that get played in weather that is downright miserable. I pity the folks driving up from Richmond and other long-distance hauls.

You forgot the word "retractable." What's your objection to that?

I think a retractable roof makes sense for DC. Lots of summer PM storms. From having attended a game in Milwaukee with the roof shut you don’t even notice it when the game starts. And when the weather is nice you have it pulled back. Best of both worlds. Unfortunately the poor Lerners can not afford it and need a subsidy from the federal government (by way of the DC government). Maybe they could call themselves farmers and get subsidized that way?

May I refer to your "old man" attitude bemoaning other's "old man" attitudes.    Years ago, my son bought me a motorcycle themed/pictures day calendar.    I kept it on one of the days (March 29) and never turned it over.     There's a motorcycle sittin' in the rain.    It's pouring.    The caption states, "If you want all the comforts of home, stay there."

In a business model, a dome probably makes sense.     But if they had a dome, I probably wouldn't go to the game with all the young people with their cellphones, participation trophies, vapin' on the ramps in a 72 degree climate controlled environment.      The good news is no one would care.      We all yell at the sky for something or the other.     The dome is your "yelling at the sky bullcrap" I suppose.

One of the "nice" things about last night's rain out is I got to bullcrap with some soldiers who attended (Army Day at the Park).   If it hadn't rained, the Nats would have herded them into a section in the outfield and then displayed them on the screen every half inning.    I suppose the Nats would have encouraged everyone to wave their hats and sing God Bless America.     The young soldiers may simply have enjoyed the chatter and not the show.     Then again, they're probably talkin' today about the old man from last night.     :)

It's all good.

BTW  Bob Dylan wrote a song about gettin' out of the way.    He wrote it in 1964.     Yunguns could at least come up with a unique idea once in a while.    I tell my son, history didn't start when you were born.

I took one look at stubhub yesterday morning for the Wednesday night game and said, f' it, I'll just give my tickets to interns at work rather than get < half price.

My positive thoughts on the retractable roof are as much fueled by the season starting several weeks too early (when we're still dealing with night games played in the 30-40 degree temperature range) and, more importantly, World Series games played in late Oct/November. I'd feel less strongly if the season started no sooner than mid-April and the Series ended by the second week in October, with some games started with the sun still out.

If Nats Park had a retractable roof you'd have fans wanting cover from the sun when it hit 72 and then to block the wind when it dropped below 68. The mechanism would break from never being opened.

Retractable roofs are the unique idea, and here you are talking about "the old days."

If it's pouring rain, you can't play the game.

How much money do they actually make selling beer, considering there are labor costs to keeping the stadium open?

I always love it when old people talk about participation trophies like kids came up with the idea or are too dumb to realize what they are- they were created by boomer parents who were deluded enough to think their kids would actually believe everyone is a winner. It’s actually nice to see them slowly getting phased out

I believe the Brewers play about half their games with the top closed. So still about 40 games a year for Mitlen to yell at the sky.
