6.5 games back....what's it going to take?
« Topic Start: May 12, 2019, 02:59:46 AM »
Well first off we need Turner back healthy in the 2 spot.

1- RF Adam Eaton
2- SS Trea Turner
3- LF Juan Soto
4- 3B Anthony Rendon
5- 2B Howie Kendrick / Brian Dozier
6- C Kurt Suzuki / Yan Gomes
7- 1B ??
8- CF Victor Robles

Bench

1B- Matt Adams
OF- Gerardo Parra
IF- Wilmer Difo

It seems to me 1B is a glaring hole. Matt Adams is a nice bench piece but we need to upgrade the position. Zimmerman is done and shouldn't see the field if we want to contend. We need to make a move to get a power bat at 1B. The rest of that lineup can win some games.

Michael Taylor is useless. Once we get our squad healthy get rid of him.

Pitchers.

We have 3 legit aces. Scherzer, Stras and Corbin have been excellent. Anibal Sanchez and Jeremy Hellickson have been atrocious. We need another SP and either one of these guys can be our #5.

1- Max Scherzer
2- Patrick Corbin
3- Stephen Strasburg
4- ?
5- Anibal Sanchez or Jeremy Hellickson

The bullpen has been brutal but has shown signs of life lately.

Dootlittle, Fedde, Miller and Suero are the only 4 that should be kept around. Suero has struggled but has a nice WHIP. He shouldn't be used in high leverage situations.

Joe Ross needs to go to AAA. Jennings, Sipp and Grace need to GTFO. Barraclough hasn't had a clean inning in forever but is a decent arm in a game where we are up big. I never want to see Rosenthal again.

So we have 5 decent receivers.

Closer- Sean Doolittle
8th- ??
7th- ??
Wander Suero
Justin Miller
Kyle Barraclough
Erik Fedde

So by the looks of it we need to:

Gone:

1B- Ryan Zimmerman
OF- Michael Taylor
RP- Tony Sipp
RP- Joe Ross (AAA)
RP- Dan Jennings

Needs:

Starting 1B
#4 SP
8th inning BP
7th inning BP

One of the BP arms needs to be a lefty.

So if we are serious about the division Rizzo needs to get on the horn and bring in some legit reinforcements.

On top of that, we need far more pen help.

We have to go on a 10 game run, and we haven't shown the ability to do that in 2018 and 2019.  The Phillies are going to be big buyers at the deadline so we need to hope for them to collapse.

This is probably closer to the real answer. Rizzo is probably waiting for the team to show him something of worth before committing.

it seems like missing 'turner' could be what's monumentally wrong with this team (at least I hope)...

He's a lefty with a 2.03 ERA. That' kryptonite for Nats hitters.

Stats are meaningless to mister geometry. Except when they’re not.

To be fair, the only thing that counts is wins. Ryu is 4-1 this year.

The only thing that will get the Nats get out of this rut is a prolonged winning streak. That seems like mission impossible these days. They haven’t won consecutive games in nearly a month.

Well. No. They are 7.5 back. 8 in the loss column.

Jennings doesn't look like he could get anyone out in A ball, no less the majors. No control and everyone tees off on him.

10 games?  I'd be happy with 2 games right now.  It's been nearly a month since that's happened.

Hey, I thought you were an old guy like me.  You know that "complete game" is redundant.

Rizzo: "i've got no one else to try, so let's just give jennings the season to figure it out."
