Never seen a whole so much less than the sum of its parts.  That took some managing.

Thanks for thinking of us who were once kids rooting for Camilo and Harm. It IS getting late indeed.

Our story all year was lack of pitching. Thinking a rotation of Max, Petunia, Gio, Roark and Whoever was a playoff combo was delusional, and they blew the bullpen with bad moves. Max is great but no spring chicken, Petunia can't be counted on and the rest--well. Reconstruction sorely needed.

A Mets friend says, "Will you now fire Dusty?" I said, "What, you didn't know?" He said, "No, who is Davey Martinez?" Obviously Davey made as big an impression on him as he did the Nats. To paraphrase something Winston Churchill is quoted as saying (but never said): An empty golf cart drove in from center field and Davey Martinez got out.

Neighbor and I were at the game.    It encapsulated the whole season.    Mediocre hitting, head shaking base running, decent opponent pitching, etc.    It was an uneventful warning track power affair performed by a .500 baseball team.

BTW   I decided last night I'm gonna live forever.    :)

Sounds like you found the Nats-sponsored Fountain of Youth, a mythological item discovered by disillusioned fans at the park. You can't see the door unless you're truly, truly disappointed by the Nats' performance on the field.

Maybe this is what purgatory looks like.

If the Caps can finally win it all it gives hope the Nats will to. But it's a good point us old guys can't wait for too many years. I still have some moves left in me but a whole generation of cubs, senators, and red sox fans went without going to the promised land so I hope it doesn't happen to us too.
The one good thing from this year is we un-expectantly found a young star in Soto.

This board was whistling it as well.     Oh, and don't forget "small sample size".    :stir:

And we can still beat the Filthies for second. Something, anyway.

lolz, the "slow start" wasn't the problem. They were in 1st place on June 10, playing at a 93 win pace. Then everything started catching up to them. If they'd been able to sustain that pace, and they probably should have, they'd be 2 games up on the Braves. The "start" wasn't the problem, they started just fine. If they're sitting at 16-16 next year like they did this year, you're damn right I'm gonna say it's early. Because it will be.

Yep

We loved every minute of the season  ...  the "it's early"; small sample size; rainouts; heat; wins; losses; damned Cardinal/Cubs/Mets fans; late night WC game; the Marlin's swordfish; view of The Point; my new found love of stadium tater tots and Vienna Lager; WNFF meet up; hoodies; steins to be picked up  ....   I can't wait for next year.

Which is when Strasburg went on the DL and the wheels came off the bus.

This. Strasburg went to the DL. While he was there, Gio Gonzalez went 1-9 with 6.78 ERA, and Tanner Roark went 5-6 with a 4.56 ERA. Jeremy Hellickson was our defacto number 2.

Sean Doolittle quickly followed Strasburg in early July. Then you had Herrera and Madson with injuries.

And the whole time, no Daniel Murphy and Bryce Harper trying to hit 55+ homers for himself in a career year.
