You're definitely misremembering. I may not be as old as some of you but I remember watching live fights on regular television. I even recall getting up early to watch live fights that were being fought in Japan (didn't Ali "fight" a Japanese wrestler at some point?). But this was in the 1970's so you guys may be talking about the Flintstone days.
Aoki was the wrestler.  It was a joke.  When we went to the Muhammed Ali museum there was no mention of that "fight" whatsoever. It's the only thing my wife knew about Ali since they showed it in Korea.

I'm thinking the mid to late 1960s. Closed circuit TV.  There were some live on regular TV.  The first article indicates closed circuit tv started in the 1950s.  There would be no reason for people to go and pay to watch such fights if they were on regular tv.

There were live fights (Friday nights, etc.) but some 60s bouts were in movie theaters.    They called it "closed-circuit".

EDIT: found this  ...

A look back at the 1964 Clay-Liston closed-circuit telecast
Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of the 2/25/1964 heavyweight boxing match in Miami between challenger Cassius Clay (now known as Muhammad Ali) and defending champion Sonny Liston.

Theater Network Television, Inc (TNT). produced the closed-circuit telecast of this fight and carried it live at 10 pm ET on a Tuesday night. The announcers on that telecast were Steve Ellis and former heavyweight champion Joe Louis. The production was shown in over 350 theaters and arenas throughout North America. TNT also made the telecast available via satellite to Europe on a tape delay of a few hours.

Great minds...

I liked Ken Buchanan--for some reason I believe his championship fight against Duran was on live at home TV--Duran won it with a low blow as I recall.

He also "fought" Lyle Alzado at some point.

Like I said though, that was all before my time. I do remember my father taking my older brothers to the Capital Centre to watch the Leonard/Duran fight in closed circuit and I was pissed off that me and my two younger brothers were left at home. :? That, to me, was the beginning of payperview fights that picked up steam when Tyson became an attraction.

Ken Buchanan  was a great champion. They both continued to fight after the bell and Duran did land a low blow that ended the fight. But Buchanan was already in trouble because of Duran's constant pressure and he was not going to last the distance.

They did a radio round by round recap of Duran/Leonard.    I remember sittin' out side my apartment building waitin' for updates.

Yea, they realized that they could sell it to you on your home TV so no one had to trek to theaters anymore.

Since we have gone way off the track in this thread why stop.  For some reason this guy Tyrone Everett popped into my mind.  I worked part time in an office downtown during college.  One of the guys there would sneak out and head over to watch the murder trial of his GF.  And then fill us in on the developments when he returned.  It was hard on us before the internet.
