I didn't think of his comment that way, but now that you've said it, I don't see any other way to look at it. :|

...and Himself telling MLB if you want me to be in the Home Run Derby, I had better be on the team...

That was in essence what he was saying. He probably fears that with such a horrible season he would not be selected (and I don't know how any conscionable fan could possibly vote for him at this point) and he can't bear the humiliation that would entail. That's like when Muhammad Ali announced that if he lost to Ken Norton he would retire and since boxing could not have that happen he was handed the decision by the judges on a fight he clearly lost (and Harper is no Muhammad Ali). :smh:

Yeah... my half drunk tweet to my kid when he said he told me so about what would happen when Eaton got back...

Told me so about what? That arguably the best CF in the NL, and the hottest hitter  on the team, would be warning the bench while Himself, who is barely over the Mendoza line, would be playing - out of position -  to suck?"

So what was it your son was claiming he predicted?

Was that the bout at Yankee Stadium?

He blew off the little league clinic this morning, sent out notice at 12:30 last night. I'm ready to move on.

Kolko is basically a team employee, he can't ask real questions.

No. The one at yankee stadium was their 3rd fight (which in my opinion was at worst, for Norton, a draw). I'm talking about the second bout in LA. Norton won the 1st fight in San Diego easily and even then one referee had Ali winning. :smh: Norton won all 3 of their fights in my estimation.

This is the worst Nationals team we’ve seen since 2011.

I said this very thing in a GDT the other day and everyone started quoting various stats assuring me that he was a shoe-in to be a starter.  :hysterical:

The stats have nothing to do with the fan vote.  It's a popularity contest based on prior year results.

I’m pretty sure no one on here said his stats deserve an all star bid. What they did say is that he likely will be voted in anyway. And lo and behold, he’s currently in starting position in the balloting.

No, that was me, at the time Harper had an OPS that was top 3 for qualified NL outfielders, so it was a correct statement. Who knew he'd drop from the top to the bottom in less than a month. We need Pappy back to slap some sense into Harp. He's either swinging for the third deck or doing the slapper thing. Martinez and Long aren't the ones to fix him.

Could be a mindfact but wasn't the Yankee Stadium one on regular TV (no pay per view at a movie theater for that fight).    I swear I was at a co-workers apartment somewhere in PG County.    Some of us were playin' cards, drinkin' and smokin'.    Watched the fight as well.

It had to be on regular TV since most of those fights aired that way in those days (the first fight I recall being "satellite" was Leonard/Duran 1). Those fights were before my time but I'm a boxing aficionado and I watch tons of classic fights.

I may be mis-remembering but back in the Ali day, the fights were usually broadcast live in theaters around town.  There was little or no live TV for fights.  Then they were on TV taped after a week or so with Howard Cosell on Wide World of Sports. I remember listening the Clay-Liston fights with my dad on the radio.

That's what I thought as well but you're older than me.     :)     I remember watching one of the Patterson/Johannson fights at a drive-in about a week after the live fight.

You're definitely misremembering. I may not be as old as some of you but I remember watching live fights on regular television. I even recall getting up early to watch live fights that were being fought in Japan (didn't Ali "fight" a Japanese wrestler at some point?). But this was in the 1970's so you guys may be talking about the Flintstone days.

There were live fights (Friday nights, etc.) but some 60s bouts were in movie theaters.    They called it "closed-circuit".

EDIT: found this  ...

A look back at the 1964 Clay-Liston closed-circuit telecast
Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of the 2/25/1964 heavyweight boxing match in Miami between challenger Cassius Clay (now known as Muhammad Ali) and defending champion Sonny Liston.

Theater Network Television, Inc (TNT). produced the closed-circuit telecast of this fight and carried it live at 10 pm ET on a Tuesday night. The announcers on that telecast were Steve Ellis and former heavyweight champion Joe Louis. The production was shown in over 350 theaters and arenas throughout North America. TNT also made the telecast available via satellite to Europe on a tape delay of a few hours.
