I wonder if it's better to assume he's done. Is there a limit to the number of players you can have on long term DL?
I think with Kelley's history, the outlook is not good, which is a shame. He seems like a genuinely likeable guy.
There is no limit to the number of players you can have on the DL, but there will come a time that the Nats want to get his money off the books (assuming this is the end of the line), since payroll on the DL counts towards the luxury tax, and Kelley's $5 million would represent a nice little bucket to play with. I would expect the Nats to DFA Kelley, and for him to clear waivers, and for the Nats to assign him to a minor league contract, much like they did with Aaron Barrett; either way, the Nats will end up giving him the money left on his contract, but an outright release of a popular teammate that is currently dealing with a major injury is not a recipe for a happy clubhouse. The Nats' handling of Barrett, as well as Bryan Harper, has been pretty stand-up (giving those guys contracts in free agent years despite a 0% chance that either would throw a single pitch in the course of that year, essentially giving each of them an opportunity to get paid while they rehab) and I think buys them a lot of goodwill (plus at least with Harper, there's the chance at getting a solid lefty reliever AND a gold star with his little brother).
