Also, with 15 games left vs. ATL and PHI, those become massively important. They haven't always shown the urgency they need to in those situations. That's gonna need to change in the 2nd half.

The Barves series after the break is a must.

Yep. Need Max and Stras to hit the ground running out of the break. Huge tone-setter.

we just wrapped up series against the Marlins, Pirates, and Mets, that should be a stretch to make up games
This. To me, this team didn't do enough to gain ground.

Yep, can't undo that, though. Gotta chip away. Have to start working the way back from where they are, not where they were. If they can find a way to make up a game and half every 11 games like they just did, they'll win the division by 3 games.

That time has passed. The Nats won't be winning the division with Bryce Harper still on this team.

Made up a game and a half in the last week and a half.
Really bad first half of a season, but the Nats right now are not far enough out to give up. With the Braves, Marlins, and Mets all coming up right after the ASB, I think we will know in a hurry what we want to do at the deadline or on waivers.

If they struggle and fall any further behind, I am ready to shop Murphy to the AL along with Adams and Reynolds to anyone needing hitting. If they put a few wins together, I hope the Nats get aggressive for a catcher and a #3 or #4 starter.

Rumor mill is churning out Realmuto and Eovaldi. That would be quite a grab.

The price for that deal(s) would have to include Kieboom or Robles. I don't like that unless the Nats come out of the ASB and put some wins together right away. I know it is dumb to make trades based on a week or two of performance, but if the Nats make a trade for a catcher and an expiring pitcher than look up a couple weeks into August and are 8 or 9 games down then that is a really bad trade, especially if they moved Kieboom or Robles.

I'm okay making a move to strengthen a team down the stretch, but they better a high expectation of making the playoffs as a result of the trade. I still am totally in support of the Rivero-Melancon trade, but only because they made the playoffs and needed to increase their odds.

It would also be stupid costly and not really fixing this team.

I'd need to see us come out of the game and win like 10 of 11 before I even consider dealing for a rental. Realmuto makes a little more sense because he's under a little bit of control.

Eovaldi!?!? That guy is straight garbage. No way does Rizzo give up anything but a ham sandwich for him.

That would be a good deal.  Then he could be indicted.

I am surprised neither Philadelphia or Atlanta beat that price for Machado. They're in a dogfight, Nats conceivably not far behind, could have made sense.

Perhaps Manny didn't want Philly or Atlanta and is looking for that long term deal with a possible future permanent team.  The next 3 months could be his tryout for a long term deal.

I was actually hoping that Philly or Atlanta would give up a boatload of prospects for Machado's rental.

Likely because neither one of them wanted to sacrifice big pieces of their future for a rental. Their window is just opening. They don't want to give up a long term piece for a win now piece. How good would you have felt giving up Anthony Rendon, Brian Goodwin, or Alex Meyer in 2012 for two and a half months of Machado?

If we won the World Series I would feel great about it.

Fair counterpoint, but I think the Phillies and Braves both have deeper farms than the Nats did then. We always had top line prospects like Rendon, Turner, Robles, and so on, but rarely did we have those types that would be B or C prospects, like an Alex Meyer. And is there reason to believe Machado wouldn't sign with the Phillies or Braves long term?

Full disclosure, I know very little about the intricacies of the Braves and Phillies systems nor do I know much about the Machado situation.

The Braves didn't really need Machado. They have Swanson and Camargo for Short and 3rd, plus Culberson and Flaherty for big league depth, plus a few guys on the farm for more depth.  They still have a lot of trading chips in the farm but their priorities are definitely pitching pitching pitching. Their youngster arms are starting to show the strain of full seasons at the major league level, with Fried and Soroka on the DL along with veteran Vizcaino, and Newcomb has been losing control and velocity so a DL stint for him wouldn't surprise me either.

What in the actual freak. I haven’t diagnosed that in someone over 10 years old, ever. Does he have kids?

Well I really feel bad for him. Talk about no good deed going unpunished.
