We trade Harper, we win the division.
I would like you to expand on your thought process. What are the reasons that back up your statement.

After that HRD performance, I don't know how you manage the optics of trading Harper if you are still in contention. Not saying it's not the right move, but Rizzo would have to be awfully sure of himself.

but, getting rid of Harper, wouldn't be indicative of selling, or giving up, as it would just be the right move to get this organization over the hump...

The derby increased his value, with other teams and the fans. Unless we got a haul in a trade the fanbase would revolt. And if Rizzo doesn't make a contract offer that's unlike any other to date the fans will revolt. Until they sign another big name free agent.

The vast majority of Nats fans would crap a brick if the Nats stay in contention but dump Harper.  He's very popular with the everyone but malcontents.

I probably mention this comparison too much, but it reminds me a lot of the Garciaparra situation in 2004.  He was playing a bit better than Harper, but it was obvious his mind was not in it.  His defense was down, he missed time, and while I hate to mention RBI, for a middle of the order bat, he was way off what was expected.  They traded him for some pieces they needed (Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mientk . . .) that especially improved the D, and the team improved its performance.  A Harper trade would be different in that it would be for prospects, but in the short term, Soto plus any two of Taylor, Robles, and Eaton would dramatically improve the defense. Offensively, it would be a question of how close Robles / Taylor can get to the offense Harper would give you.  That kind of depends on your Harper expectations.  They can probably get close to what he has been doing, but nowhere near peak Bryce.  The teams we are chasing aren't the 2004 NYY, either.  You can make a case the Nats  could, maybe would, win the NL East even without Bryce and that dealing him will not worsen our likelihood of winning.

You don't realize just how big Garciaparra was in Boston when Epstein pulled the trigger.

Exactly. This is why I don't want to trade him. I am okay letting him get overpaid in free agency since sports fans understand that, but a trade? That is tougher.

And some of the posters on this thread ripping on Harper would be first in line to do stat comparisons in a few years of the prospects we get in return.

It's a non-issue because the only way they're trading him would be in late August if they're out of contention at that point, which gives Rizzo more time to make a firm decision. Let's remember that Verlander was dealt at the end of August last year.

I've been thinking this, too.  Heck, the Nick Punto plus throw ins trade (Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett) was an August deal.

If the Nats make an offer in the offseason and Harper goes elsewhere, is there a 'compensation pick' awarded to the Nats?  (I am much more familiar with the NFL rules than the MLB).

4th round supplemental unless we get under the luxury tax.

"If that guy was on our side," Harper said, "that wouldn't have happened."  Talk about throwing your GM and catchers under the bus, and also ignoring your own role in this situation....wow.

How many teammates has Harper trashed in the media? Span, Papelbon, the guys currently on the team as injury replacements, and now Wieters. This from a guy with a .4 WAR for this year, his third off year out of the last five seasons.
