metro is great! Everyone but me should take it!
« on: May 18, 2016, 08:22:48 am »
I think we should have a thread dedicated to stupid stuff that Metro and other mass transit systems do.  General comments about ineptitude, breakdowns, rodents, construction, unannounced delays, early shutdowns, etc...  As well as occasional praise (like, "Hey, I got from Crystal City to Archives and only got exposed to bronchitis-inducing hacking by the guy behind me once!").

In this spirit, I enjoyed the announcement today when I got off my train, "for riders on the orange, blue and silver lines, we are experiencing delays between MacPherson Square and (I forget where) due to (something or other) heading towards Largo and New Carrollton."  thanks for the news when we are in the system and stuck.  Might as well have been "for riders on the orange, blue, and silver lines heading towards New Carrollton and Largo, you are freaked."

I took the metro to last Friday's game. I hit the Shady Grove platform at 3:53 PM and was at Capitol South at 4:45 or thereabouts. It was fantastic.

The trip home took me more than two hours. (And everyone wonders why Nats fans leave early).

I've pretty much given up on Metro.  It's faster and cheaper to be carried on a litter...at least you get fed grapes.

Missus and I drove (Lot W) on Sunday.    Weekend/Metro/timely just don't work for me anymore (from the hinterlands).

Really ?  I would think a city person would use Metro regularly (if you aren't on a bike or foot).

For those who would use the orange, silver, or blue lines, getting off at Capitol South is a way to avoid the green line crowd and is an easy walk to Nats Park.

     The only way to go taking Metro from the NoVA outback (Loudoun CO).    Qualifier:   unless the missus is with me.   :)

Also a very pleasant walk, except that stretch where you walk under the freeway (and over the railroad tracks). Even in the three years I've been using that station, the re-development is overwhelming.

It's pretty hard to beat uber.  Not everything about the "gig economy" is bad.

We do a bus-to-metro trip down and take an uber back.  Our bus route is super sketchy at night so we would get off a stop early and catch a taxi home, but an uber from the park costs about $5 more than that taxi ride did, so it's a wash when you factor in the subway fare.

It's pretty hard to beat uber.  Not everything about the "gig economy" is bad.

Uber is great for the consumer but is like a pyramid scheme for the drivers, in that the folks at the top are making a lot of $$ by recruiting others, but it's a lot less lucrative for those at the bottom; and it's bordering on indentured servitude if you're one of the poor souls who is leasing a car from Uber so that you can drive for Uber.   I am so conflicted on my feelings for Uber because I really hate their business model and I love their service/product.

the gig economy tends to be great for the customer- you can sell stuff amazingly cheap when everyone is a contractor and local regulations and labor laws can be ignored

I primarily use Uber for Caps games (door to door in 15 or so minutes for like $6), but with the Green Line in an even higher level of dysfunction than last year, I may try them for Nats.  I agree about their crappy business model, but if I dwelled excessively on the impact of my consumption patterns on the poor and disenfranchised, I would has a sad.

I just don't like the name, Uber.  I half expect my drive to be a woman named Alice and her to be nostalgic about making her country great again.

The homeless have to have some way to start up their trashcan furnaces on cold rainy nights.

Shocking, it seemed like there could never be any accountability.

You mean that constantly telling people to avoid metro during safe track is making people avoid metro?

Metrorail ridership off 11% in April-June quarter...https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/metro-fourth-quarter-ridership-plunges-11-percent/2016/09/06/b94a2fa6-744c-11e6-b786-19d0cb1ed06c_story.html...goodness, I wonder why....
Didn't safe track only start in June?  I can't wait until the July - September quarter is in.

I have like $300 on a Smarttrip card that will probably expire before I take Metro again.  I'd rather walk those 4 stops in the dark after a Caps game...one is less likely to get mugged out on the street  :P

They slipped a transfer in on me on Monday.    I was gonna take the Silver line to the Smithsonian and explore for awhile before the game.    Just out of the Wiehle Station, I heard an unintelligible message over the intercom/PA.    Didn't know what the hell the lady was talking about.    After three more stops, I had enough to put together a message.    The Silver line is going out of service at Ballston and we have to transfer to the Orange line for the ride into town.    Same platform, etc.   It was still a pain in the tookus.     After the game, I walked to Capitol South to catch the Orange line.    Had to transfer at East Falls Church to the Silver line but at least I knew it was comin'.   Like you, I try to avoid transfers  ...  particularly Metro Center and L'Enfant.

SafeTrack began the fourth of June, to be exact.
