Hitting coaches absolutely matter. It's just that they don't matter to all hitters, just to some. I don't know the breakdown, whether it's 50/50 or whatever. But I don't care if it's 10 percent, you need a hitting coach for that 10%. But a good hitting coach will be able to persuade some of those players who don't think they need his help that maybe he can help. This is where I think Schu falls short. Zimmerman, Espinosa, and Harper (in 2016) desperately needed help and all three could have benefited from the help of a competent hitting coach, one who would spend hours looking at video, of the successes and failures of a hitter and figure out what he was doing right that he's not doing now, and install the proper drills to correct the problem. I don't think Schu has done enough to correct any hitters to give those three guys the confidence to invest the time to work with him. Or maybe he was working with them, in which case, all the more reason he needs to go.
