You should do 30 minutes of interval cardio

After lifting for at least 45 minutes :D
thats cause we eat too much.
Bad knees won't allow me to do cardio much so mostly walking and lifting 2-3 times a week.
Need to cut the carbs more.

Try and at least increase the pace of your walking for 30-45 second intervals, spaced 2 minutes apart, you'll still get some benefit.

Secret to relieving muscle cramps?

http://www.outsideonline.com/2026376/could-flex-pharma-be-final-cure-muscle-cramps?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=facebookpost

Quote
A Boston startup called Flex Pharma says it knows why cramps really happen and, more important, how to prevent them. Founded by Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist Rod MacKinnon and Harvard neurobiology professor Bruce Bean, the company is testing a supplement that it says makes athletes less likely to cramp by resetting the motor nerves in seizing muscles. If true, Flex could revolutionize how cramps are understood and treated.

Sounds legit.  I think these are the same geniuses that tried to do the disposable CPAP.  Besides, we all know that pickle juice is THE best way to treat cramps.  Nothing beats a good shot of that brine.

I was watching a commercial for Tommiecopper.com.   It's a compression sleeve manufacturer.   A more general question about compression sleeves.   Are they worth the investment?     I have a pretty sore left shoulder (probably rotator related) and I'd like to get something to kind of hold it all together.

Pickle juice also wards of hangovers, witness the famed "pickleback".

KT tape does a good job (assuming you aren't insanely hairy) but anything with "copper" in it you can dismiss as a waste of money.  I used some supports my ortho surgeon gave me when I had IT band and gout issues that were a huge help but they were quite pricey.

Yea I give you a ton of credit for biking in Minnesota in the winter, I'd be scared to death of the ice.

Have been able to get back on the elliptical the last couple weeks with the help of some knee braces and have tried the increased pace (really increased cross ramp) approach.  No measurable results thus far but I feel good.  Will try to incorporate into my walking but its hard as usually do that with wife and she has some foot issues.

Thanks again.

Intervals have more to do with heart rate than pace per se- even just jogging in place or some jumping jacks to elevate it for the two minutes would get you the effect

OK, yeh; increasing the cross ramp gets the heart moving faster most definitely.

not exactly exercise, but, City Sports is liquidating.  There are 4 or so in the area, Fairfax, Bethesda, and 2 in the district.  May see if I can scoop up some shoes and clothing, maybe bike gloves.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fitness/comments/46fxfr/im_eating_and_training_like_dwayne_the_rock/

So I came across this today browsing reddit. I thought it was a really good read.

My biggest observation is wow, that is a ton of work in to food prep.  5000 calories a day is a ton and he hasn't gained weight (claims not to have anyway)

Second, is more of a question: Is he over training his chest or am I undertraining mine? Currently, I do an incline bench press of 3 sets of 3 reps (usually a warm up set where I just do the bar over 5-7 reps, concentrating on form) and then do 3 sets of 3 reps on dumbell flys. Should I be doing (a lot) more?

I think it's different styles for everyone. I used to do the chest/tri day, back/bi day type thing and get those muscles really sore for a day or two.

For the past couple years I've been doing everything in lesser amounts but more frequently. Like the 5x5 program or 20 rep squats. Simple push/pull exercises. No machines. And I've made much more progress with those and felt like the old way was a waste. It was kind of a case of less is more

However, that way seems to work well for the Rock. Soo...

I'm also not huge. 6'0 almost 180. I'm a hard gainer. So I feel if something works for me, it would have to work better for everyone else

has anyone hiked Buzzard Rock?
http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/BuzzardRockNorth/

I'm looking for somewhere to take my three year old hiking this weekend- she's a big fan of climbing 'mountains' - so far sky meadows has been her favorite hike, but being 3 there's a definite limit to how much she can do

It's a drive, but Sugarloaf gives you lots of options. You can park near the top and take a trail up. Or park further down for a longer hike. Nice views. The green trail is stone steps.

It's pretty close to the ferry in Leesburg, so you could work that in, too. My kids loved getting out of the car for the trip over.
