Teaching Abroad/Studying Abroad Thread
« on: June 02, 2015, 11:26:26 pm »
I don't know if there's been a thread for this specifically (I think there might be a travel thread, but I wanted to cover this topic specifically). Does anyone have any study abroad/teaching abroad stories they want to share.

I'm asking now because I recently got accepted into a teaching abroad experience in the Marshall Islands and I am really at a crossroads as to whether to go or not. Any advice, wisdom on what it's like being part of a different culture, or even contempt for my online persona etc. would be much appreciated. I may be best known for being the fanatical and sometimes unfortunately irascible blue guy who does not wear pants, but behind it all I am someone who is very ambitious and needs help making a very important decision.

Bloo voyage!

Never taught/studied abroad but as someone who has been told her understanding of other cultures is "woeful" I'd say do it just so no one can ever be mean and say that to you   haha seriously if you have no commitments here to worry about I'd say take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, I may not understand other cultures very well but I have lived in different parts of the US and I can totally see how living somewhere else can help you understand and appreciate that region so much better, I can only imagine that's so much more true when you move to another country.  We'd miss your posts here for sure though so find out if you'd have access to baseball games over there :mg:

do they make you wear pants in the Marshall Islands, or can you get away with a kilt?

I'm not all that thrilled with other cultures.

According to Wikipedia, the US dropped 67 nukes on the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1958. They must be related to cockroaches.

Forgive me if this isn't as sensitive if it could be but you have Asperger's, correct?  If so, are you in any form of therapy that needs to be continued?  The reason I bring this up is that I've had friends that have done Peace Corp/JET/Teachers without borders that ran into problems with treatment during their contract.

That said, as I've told others here offline - you get one shot at this life and there's plenty of time to waste it working for a tomorrow (retirement) that will probably never come.  Have fun while you can and experience everything you can while you can.

And Marquis, they were aware of my Asperger Syndrome during the application process and they did not think it was a deterrent for me not teaching me, otherwise they would have not accepted me. Most people I talk to are very surprised I have it because I can handle the give-and-take manner of a conversation pretty well.

Absolutely, my interest was more in the spirit of "will you have support if you need it".  My dad has Asperger's and he's pretty much the human equivalent of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" so I know what you mean.

Thanks for all the responses, both serious and joking. To answer a few questions: Skippy, they do have internet service there if you are teaching on the Inner Islands, but I would be very limited in my usage. You are either placed on the Outer Islands or the Inner Islands, and I will not find out until I arrive at orientation.
JCA, the culture there is very conservative so you always have to wear appropriate and clean attire.
Blue, the problem is very unfortunate that one of the islands is completely inhabitable due to the high amount of rads.

Sounds like a good deal. Go for it!

When I was a kid, I was an AF Brat. I had spent six years overseas by the time I was 17 (Okinawa, England and Spain).  Combine that with living in the west, south, mid-atlantic and midwest and I can say I feel I have a much better time appreciating cultural differences and getting that my way ain't the only way.

That sounds like the kind of experience you should jump on with both feet because one way or another, it will open your eyes and broaden your horizons.  While it's fascinating to learn how people live, it can be equally fascinated to see what weird and distorted global views people around the world have about America.  With Hollywood as one of our chief ambasadors, it's widely assumed that we have seriously corrupt cops and police forces, that everyone is rich and drives 75K$ plus luxury cars, and that gang violence is the norm across all parts of the country.

In our globalized world, cross cultural communication is going to be the only thing that prevents pretty major problems within a 60 year time frame.  Seeing someone else as a person makes it a lot easier to speak up on their behalf when it means giving away some of your group's resources, and conversely helps the other folks spread the message that we don't all deserve to be treated as imperialistic pigs, the infidel, or whatever the hate speech of the region brands us.

(TLDR version: Awesome opportunity. After living in foreign cultures for six years as a teen, it made a huge difference how I view people outside my socioeconomic/political center. And you'll have stories to tell that will have anyone who never travelled hanging on every word.)

I know what you meant by this, but it still sounds odd...  ;)

Hehe. Yeah - think back to 1985.  How easily would you have been able to talk to a kid in rural Afghanistan with a real time video feed?

How hard would you have had to work to look up baseball statistics on how the latest Dominican prospect was doing vs. left handed hitters who hit for a high batting average (since OPS wasn't even a thing at that point)?

How long would it take to find out the capital of the sub region of the USSR known as Kazakhstan?

My kids (first was born in 1995) have never know a world where the card catalog was a thing. The idea of buying a home Encyclopedia was obsolete in 1994 when we got our first CD-ROM drive.  And fully obsolete when Broadband started to become the widespread norm around 2000.

But all that knowledge, so readily available at our finger tips, is 100 miles wide and half an inch deep.  The value of actually going abroading and teaching in the Mariners or any other non-temperate, no good sized western city near by, etc... that's just priceless.

good luck.  I hope you enjoy it and that it is a good experience for you and those you will meet and teach.

Your first lesson plan should discuss why the Barves are gutless unAmerican d-bags and why that is a bad thing.

People who don't live abroad at some point in their lives (or at least travel) always wish they had.  You can at least catch the World Series on VOA or AFR shortwave  :pimp:
