Anyone know of a safe cheap hotel in LA?
« on: December 22, 2014, 10:48:57 pm »
Going out for a few days next month and don't know jack about the area.  Wouldn't hurt if there are places to eat nearby, but safety and then price are the #1 concerns.

Not exactly in the city but I stayed in Woodland Hills during my visit.    Since there is no public transport to speak of, you're gonna need a vehicle of some kind.    Woodland is within easy striking distance of Hollywood, etc.

LA is a big town, do you know what part you'll be visiting?  If you are downtown and can find something near LA Live at a reasonable price then I'd go with that, lots of eating options within walking distance of the hotels.  There are also some low cost hotels near the airport.  Redondo Beach is pretty nice just south of the airport as well.

Try hotwire. You can save a ton of money. You don't get to pick the hotel, but you pick the neighborhood and quality level, which should be good enough to ensure safety. Good hotels probably aren't in the unsafe area and cheap hotels probably aren't in the nice area

I've been informed that LA is a rather large area, so to narrow it down - proximity to Burbank and the Griffith Observatory would be ideal.  Not planning on going into "the city".

All I can think of is all those Johnny Carson jokes about Burbank. No advice for that area of the city as have never stayed there. Check trip advisor as they have good reviews. Probably can't go wrong with one of the chains.

That's one area that I haven't visited.  I'd suggest posting your question on the appropriate trip advisor forum.  I've always found that site to be an invaluable source of information.

I couldn't agree more.  So much hype and in actuality it wasn't much better than a regular Mickey D's hamburger.

Not really. The burgers are mediocre and the fries are some of the worst fries you can get anywhere.

But if you happen to see an Umami Burger location, try one and let me know.

This isn't about good vs bad simply you have to go to an In-and-Out Burger at least once in your life. Since they don't use frozen patties, I 'd guess there isn't a standard taste profile and each location must be judged on their own.

OK, I do agree that everyone should try it, just so they know if they like it or not.

Well, if it's never frozen hand formed patties you hunger for, we never pass up Spelunkers in Front Royal when headed back from a day in the great outdoors.

A proper burger always has 2 patties with at least one slice of cheese in between and one slice on top of them.

Ok, i'm a radical, but I prefer burgers w/o american cheese.  Swiss is go to, and I like blue, but I'm touch and go on cheddar.  Has to be sharp.  Basically, anything that blands out the meat, I don't go for (other than swiss),

I HATE American cheese. If American cheese is on the burger I peel it off. Swiss is good, blue is great, havarti is surprisingly delicious (havarti, onions, BBQ, horseradish/wasabi = amazing), but pepper jack is the burger cheese of the gods.
