So.... I guess I'm officially an old geezer now
« on: August 19, 2014, 09:17:03 pm »
I'm now all moved in to  Leisure World.  Posted some pics to my FB page. Really nice 1 bedroom co-op, place is really well maintained. It's so  quiet! And no mortgage- bnought it for cash.  I miss my koi pond and garden. Had to switch from Dsh network to Comcast; took 4 appts. (2 missed w/o a call) to get my cable and internet installed. No car, so the LW shuttle bus is really helpful. Same cell # for those who have it.  Give me a call.    :old:

So there you are!  Wondering what had been going on with you.

My folks moved in to a retirement village about 2 years ago, and my Dad really missed his gardens but other than that it's been a great move for them.  He has a garden now, it's just not as expansive or convenient.  The best thing though is there are so many people with similar backgrounds or interests, so they have made many good friends.

I was looking for a place I could afford to buy, and not have a mortgage again. No worry about keeping the house in good condition. Monthly charges are not exorbitant and include all utilities, as well as basic cable. Plenty of things to do here if you're so inclined. 2 pools (indoor and outside), fitness center, 3 restaraunts. Pros and cons weighed, and then I asked my sister (a realtor) to find a nice place, which she did in spades. Shuttle bus service, still near the rest of the family. And I do have a pretty large enclosed balcony (I'm the 3rd floor) to fill up with plants.  Debating some other changes down the road- setting up another saltwater tank, and setting up a small mini-pond in a container for the balcony.

I'd head down to the northern Outer Banks if I was looking for a place to crash.  Sand, beer, fishing, what's not to like?

Don't worry, I'll send you the shopping list ahead of time.

I'm thinking a nice Quebecois Porter with Chicory would be just the thing to sooth the autumn palate.

I also have family down in Colonial Beach, but I felt I'd be away from everyone and isolated. I would like for Shawn and his fiance (wedding in May in Montauk) to be able to visit as frequently as they desire. I just move to the sofa and they get the queen size bed. LOL

No, wish it did. Deposits me outside at Leisure World Plaza, take bus to Wheaton Metro, then Red line, than transfer for Navy Yard. Around $12 and I budget 2 hrs. travel time each way to allow for delays BTW, they have a nice 18 hole course here, as well as tennis, etc. I haven't played in 2 decades, but
Shawn is anxious to play here.

Have lots of fun in the new place; retirement pending for me.  Not ready to totally downsize yet but someday not too far off.

I thought Leisure World was near a stop north of Wheaton, like Glenmont?

I have friends between Arcola and University in Wheaton.  Max's is at Amherst and University, I think, if you get a falafel or deli craving.

's shwarma is fantastic. And Leisure World is a tad north of Glenmont station, hence the need for the bus.And than ks for the wishes, Natsinpwc.

Hey Salty - hope to join you in LW next year.  Hubby and I are ditching the house next spring and want to rent in LW for a few years till we can retire to our cabin in the woods.  We have a dog, so we're thinking of those older little patio houses that are all on one level and have a bit of yard.  I'm not going up and down an elevator 20 times a day to walk the dog.

We're boomers in our late 50's - from what I hear there's quite the generation gap at LW between the younger boomers moving in and those older residents who aren't thrilled about the new "young 'uns".  I'm curious - are you seeing that?

I haven't noticed that (yet), but then I'm still the new guy on the blocks. So far, everyone is very nice, and quite helpful to the new fellow. I must admit I seem to be in the younger strata, especially compared to the fair sex. Oh well.
