We don't have ballplayers like Bobo anymore

The Mets broadcasters discussed five-time Nat pitcher Bobo Newsom tonight. It's worth reading his SABR biography just to get a sense of the kind of player we hardly see anymore:

Bobo pitched for: Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, St Louis Browns, Washington, Bosox, Browns (again), Tigers, Washington (second time), Brooklyn (again), Browns (third time), Washington (third time), Philadelphia A's, Washington (fourth time, going 11 - 8 in 1946 at age 38), New York Yankees, New York Giants, Washington (fifth and final time, 1952, at age 42), and then a season-and-a-half for the A's. He also pitched 1949-1951 in the minors.

SABR mentions some of Bobo's superstitions when pitching...for instance, he would not allow a scrap of paper anywhere on the mound. Shirley Povich said the same. Bobo once completed a game after a line-drive broke his knee-cap in about the fourth inning. Don't miss the story of Ossie Bluege and Opening Day.
