CLEVELAND -- Friday's ballgame against the Mariners will not count. But the injury that occurred during the aborted attempt to get the home opener in might linger on for the Indians.
Catcher Victor Martinez came out of the game in the third inning after suffering a strained left quadriceps while running down the first-base line. He is listed as day-to-day, but that could change Saturday.
"We'll see how he feels," manager Eric Wedge said. "We'll get an MRI on it, but it is a potential DL situation."
If Martinez does land on the 15-day disabled list, he'd likely be replaced on the active roster by Triple-A Buffalo catcher Mike Rose, who would back up Kelly Shoppach.
With a runner on first and one out in the third, Martinez hit a hard grounder to Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre. The ball was misplayed, allowing Martinez to reach. But he pulled up lame near the bag at first and knelt to the ground in pain in shallow right field.
The temperatures for this game, which was called on account of snow in the top of the fifth, were in the low-30s, which might have contributed to the injury.
"Obviously, the cold weather doesn't help," Wedge said.
Martinez had been off to a strong start to the season, going 6-for-12 with a pair of doubles and a team-high five RBIs in three games.
