In all seriousness tho, Bryce has hurt himself previously running hard on balls that had no chance of ever being hits.  Regardless of whether running out ground balls is important or not, if Williams can't get a simple message like 'run out grounds balls' without extreme measures like benching Harper in an important game, I question what 'managerial skills' Williams has.

Harper has also given up on a grounder that got bobbled in a big game. Sometimes it's the player.

Certain people who make multiple errors in one game have yet to sit on the bench. Just saying. Harper is nursing a muscle injury. Is it better to injure himself again and miss significant time? And calling him out like that. Just screams unprofessional.

Committing errors is not the same as failing to hustle (not that I agree with the benching. to me that's petty).

Well Williams did say they have talked about it before. I still think it's petty. The pitcher had the ball in his glove before Harper left the batter's box. Harper tried to play it casual but he seemed really ticked off.

Throwing your most important player under the bus when he already has such a (unjust) horrible reputation? I don't care what he did, this is a joke. You're the manager. Protect your guys. The actual play where Harper was lazy... lmfao. He's hurt. A comebacker to the pitcher. Running it out would be the stupidest thing Harper could do. I don't think it's a coincidence that he's fabricating stories about the team to distract attention of all of his "things" (base running, defense, etc) not working and being 2-7 vs real teams.

Absolute clown. Get rid of him before we're in a giant hole.

Not being in the clubhouse, I can't say that. If it's something that he's seen as a recurring issue that needed to be addressed beyond the normal measures, sometimes you have to do things like this. Gotta establish the expectation and enforce it from the beginning, which we're still at for Williams, if he didn't take the action to address it, then it's almost impossible to get that culture back to where you want it.

All this stuff with Harper not running it out due to being injured is a load.  If he is hurt get him out of the game and to the DL if necessary.

Maybe he just doesn't like the general attitude of the action? Just giving up on a play?

He probably doesn't want Bryce to bust it all the way down the line with a sore quad, but inferring from his "intense, keep the pressure on" mindset he's preached, it probably rubs him the wrong way when you just give up on a play completely.

I'm still not convinced on the benching, but just my thoughts.

I think it was the right decision.  I don't care if Harper was out by a mile or not, he has to run things out.  I don't see Trout taking plays off.  Sure, he might be nursing an injury, but he still has to play.  I agree with TigerFan on this one.  If the kid is actually hurt, send him to the DL.  Souza can fill in where needed, his bat is ready.

Another interesting aspect to this is that Williams' former-playerness is very much at the forefront. It's obvious that buys him a lot of respect in the clubhouse, and you would think that he's making this move from a player's point of view somehow. I mean, if he were on this team, I think he would have wanted to see that happen.

The play that Harper took off is on Twitter.  Watch it again, he didn't even get out of the box quickly.  I don't care if he isn't running 100%, but he has to find a way to go at least 80% out of the box rather than the 10% he gave.

Meh, I've seen Zimmerman and others run about as hard if not less on easier plays than that. Why do they get a pass and Harper is called a spoiled prima donna?

Are we all sure this is true?  Harper barely ran out of the box on that play.  Are you sympathizing with him or are you absolutely certain that everyone was basically strolling out of the box?
