I flipped it on while Nats' Talk was on break at the top of the hour.    Finland scored two goals ....  geesh.

Kind of analogous to ballplayers (such as Ayala) getting hurt during the WBC.

crap happens.  It could have been a horrible tattoo accident or a hot tub injury (hello Kerry Wood).

Well the rub with Ayala is that he would not have been pitching at the time for the Nats, he would have been rehabilitating, not throwing high pressure innings.  But otherwise, yes.

I would like to see what Don Cherry is saying about a Canada-Sweden match up. I think there is no country he hates more than the Chickenswedes.

Quote
Born in Kingston, Ontario, Cherry has Canadiana running through his veins. The thought of foreign-born hockey players potentially taking jobs from good old Canadian boys is enough to give him a coronary. Although Cherry’s disdain for all European hockey players runs rampant, he’s always reserved a special disdain for the Swedish.

Memorable line: In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Cherry was asked if he regretted questioning the fortitude of Swedish hockey players by calling them “chicken Swedes.”  He replied, “I never called a Swede a chicken because I have nothing against chickens.

Quote
Cherry’s popularity in Canada reaches further than Coach’s Corner. In 1990, the flamboyant announcer became the pitchman for a Canadian sports lottery. During the television commercial, he took a shot at the ballet profession by saying: “Come on, what do you think this is, ballet practice?” Dancers everywhere took exception to the slight on the sport and challenged Cherry to don the slippers and try it himself. Ever the sportsman, Cherry showed up for class and immediately gained new respect for the art form. He was even critical of how little the top ballet dancers earned.

Memorable line: After Cherry was led through a series of stretches and leaps, he still found a way to work some Swede bashing into his virtuoso performance. He exclaimed, “I’m starting to think I’m Tomas Sandstrom here!”

If it weren't for the U.S. losing the bronze medal game and that defector US guy who went to Russia in the parallel slalom we would be ahead in the medal count.

What I posted to a fellow distraught American hockey fan:

Just because we lost to canada doesn't mean this wasn't an awesome Olympics. In 2010, we were pretty huge underdogs compared to Sweden and Canada. Getting Silver was a major accomplishment. This year we were more equal, but Canada is still a way, way better team on paper. But look at this team. It's almost all young, up-and-coming talent. And we still went toe-to-toe with Canada and beat Russia. Four years from now pretty much the entire team will be back, and most will be entering or in their prime. Patrick Kane will be 29! Add in guys like Seth Jones, Chris Kreider and the slew of American talent entering the NHL and you have a roster that could beat Canada. Losing today was devastating, but the fact that we are where we are is proof that 2010 wasn't a fluky run carried by a goaltender. USA hockey is an emerging giant, and it hasn't even come close to it's full potential. 2014 is going to be one of those years we look back on and say, "this is when things really got going."

It's hard to get down about losing in a one and done hockey tournament. Losing one game by a goal isn't like being badly swept in a seven game series. I think they should make the group stage longer and get more round robin games among good teams. Then maybe go straight to semis or maybe quarter finals. Make the round robin mean something.

I wonder if the format was to accommodate the NHL.  They really can't afford a round robin after the 1st round.  Truth is, I kind of like the NCAA baseball format of double elimination once you get to 8 teams or 4 teams.  Maybe do double elimination brackets to get to a gold medal and a bronze medal game.

Russia played three rounnd robins then could have played 4 more games. 7 total. Make it 4 round robins and then quaterfinals or 5 RR then semis. There are probably 5 or 6 legit teams. no need to waste elimination games by bringing 12 or even 8 to the elimination round

You gotta wonder if, for a bunch of NHL guys, once the gold is off the table, they just don't care anymore.

Congrats to canada.  Now let's get the nhl season back. Looking more and more like they will not be at the 2018 games.
