Kev - don't laugh that much. I actually found myself rooting for the Nats a bit in 2012 during the last game of the series at Fenway. I was at my nephew's wedding that weekend and missed the whole series except the start of the Sunday game, and I found myself more watching the Nats performance than the Sox. I still don't think I could ever root for another team over the Sox, but sometimes when your teams go head to head you don't know how you will react until the game gets going. In '97, I went to OPACY determined to root for the Os v the Sox because the Sox were out and I wanted the Os to knock off the NYY in the division. Then Mo Vaughn hit a homer and I caught myself applauding. In 2012 at Fenway, I think Espinosa got a hit (rare enough I should remember it), and I think I was feeling good about the Nats rally.
