When do you guys think Harper begins a rehab assignment if he's spending this week holding a bat and gripping a baseball?

Matt Williams says Bryce Harper took batting practice today for the first time. Williams again mentioned July 1 as best case for return.

Byron Kerr ‏@masnKerr  1m
Williams says "beyond July 1" for Harper return

More time for Williams to figure out where to play him.  :hysterical:

The decision that makes sense is clear but the question is will the Nats have the balls to make it? You cannot put Zimmerman back at 3B under any scenario. Span is the odd man out.

Torn ligament will need time. Have to strengthen the muscles around the ligament.  Plus, Harper doesn't have a swing that can just pick right up. He needs at bats to get in the groove

If Span sits then who hits leadoff? That is the problem.

I know he doesn't like it but I'd bat Werth leadoff again. His slugging pct is 120 points down from last year but he is still getting on base at a decent clip (.365).

Anthony Rendon or Jayson Werth.

Honestly,  even if he isn't benched, he shouldn't hit leadoff.  He doesn't take a lot of pitches, he isnt getting walks, and he doesn't hit for a high enough average to put his OBP at a leadoff level.

Quite frankly,  McLouth is probably a better leadoff hitter if given equal playing time.

I'm predicting June 30th return.  He'll head out on a rehab assignment next week, then assuming all goes well, we'll see him on the 30th against CO.

Werth
Rendon
Harper
Zim
LaRoche
Ramos
Desmond
Espinosa

That lineup would rake.

Span has a few bad games and people want him gone again. Ridiculous how short a leash he has here.

Or you can say Span had a few good games and people want him to stay. How ridiculous a long leash he has here.

The season numbers still suck

They're better than Espinosa's.

The benchmark shouldn't be one of the worst hitters in baseball

Espinosa and Rendon's infield defense is far more useful than Span's in center field. Especially when Bryce Harper is quite good in CF.

Best solution would be to trade for Brian Dozier or Ben Zobrist.

Dozier is one of Minnesota's best players and one that isn't a veteran retread like Suzuki or Hammer. They won't deal him unless they get a huge package in return.
