I often wonder what I would have done had I been old enough to be drafted for Vietnam. I know I would have been torn.

Conscientious objector?  Did they allow those to avoid being drafted??

He didn't do jail time, did he?   He only lost 3 years of boxing and millions of dollars.   I know a couple of guys who went to Canada.
