From David Schoenfeld at ESPN:

Quote
Washington Nationals
What do they need? They acquired starter Doug Fister from the Tigers and signed outfielder Nate McLouth to add strength to a bench that was horrible. Otherwise, look for them to sign a veteran lefty for the bullpen -- Scott Downs or Eric O'Flaherty -- and there have also been rumors that Denard Span could be available.

Who's the fifth starter? The top four looks very strong with Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, Gio Gonzalez and Fister, and Ross Detwiler may move to the pen, leaving Tanner Roark, Taylor Jordan and Ross Ohlendorf in competition for the final slot. The Nationals were sixth in the NL with a 3.60 rotation ERA in 2013, but with Fister a likely upgrade over Dan Haren, this group has a chance to be the best in the league.

What's Bryce Harper going to do? The Steamer projection system has him at .271/.356/.480, essentially what he did last season. I'll take the over.

I'll take the way over for Harper.

By comparison steamer predicted .263/.334/.456 last year, which were close to his 2012 numbers.

trumbo is available according to Ken Rosenthal.  He seems like a good "rizzo guy" - plus fielder, controllable for 3 more seasons, plus fielder, plus fielder and he's a plus fielder (oh, and he's controllable).

I'm guessing any package for him starts with one of JZ, Giolito or even Gio.

Uhh, I thought Trumbo was a terrible fielder and really only hit for power.  Sure, it would be nice to have him hit 30+ bombs a year, but doing so while getting on base under 30 percent of the time is tough to live with.

EDIT: Looks like advanced metrics really like him at 1B defensively.  How about Detwiler and Roark straight up?

+ fielder at 1st, can't play the OF.  So if we got him, it would be to replace LaRoche.

You would seriously consider Zimmermann or Gio for Trumbo?

Trumbo isn't worth any of those three pitchers.

Looking for some pop off the bench, the Nats have been in touch with free agent Jeff Baker. Plays all four corner positions, kills lefties.

That would be an upgrade over Hairston and a good complement to the McLouth signing

He does hit lefties well.  Platoon him with Laroche playing against the righties that could be interesting.

Cotillo tweets: Maddon says a left-handed bat at first base is the preference.   Paging Mr. Rizzo.

Trumbo hits for power but I'd rather not have a 1B with an OBP around or under .300

We'll take his contract off Chicago's hands in our eventual deal for Sale and platoon him with moore at 1st.

Sign James Loney. Trade LaRoche for a lefty reliever/bench bat with pop.

We were interested in him before we signed LaStink the first time, but the Dodgers overvalued him.  He's definitely not worth 3 years 30 mil.

Jeff Baker was just DFA'd by the Rangers. Dude mashes lefties. Get him. Platoon him with Laroche or Harper.
