Hell, Bourn will likely win the fan vote, now.

Stupid TBS

Freese is beating Harper in votes right now. Bourne is dead last.

Harper just needs to convince the Giants fans to vote for him tonight.

How are players listed on the ballot selected anyway? I'd like to junk punch whoever picked HRod.

I'm writing him in just because

I don't think Bryce should make it. If he were hitting like he was prior to the Yankees series, I'd consider it. But the guy has really tapered off since then. His approach to the plate is messed up. Frankly, I blame Rick Eckstein.

He's a Nationals player. Give me a break.

So? All Star game is for everyone. The players having the best seasons at their position should go. So Ian Desmond? Yes. Strasburg and Gio? Definitely.

Can you honestly tell me Harper is having one of the best seasons amongst NL outfielders?

He is clearly the best MLB outfielder in the 19 year old class. ;)

I get that you can make the case that Harper doesn't have the numbers as some of his competitors, but I don't understand that there are Nats fans that wouldn't vote for him.

Pretty simple really. If you don't vote an all Nats ticket, you are not a Nationals fan.

Yet those same true fans whine when you get squads littered with Yankees

True fans never whine, they mercilessly heckle the opposition.

You realize I am joking, right?

I actually do just vote a straight Nats ticket, I think a lot of people vote for their team then treat the other league's ballot more seriously

I was at Camden Yards watching the Nats game a couple years ago and I spent an inning loudly picking between Red Sox and Yankees for each of my AL votes.

That's pretty much how I vote.

My approach is simple.
  • Vote for Nationals players.
  • Vote for Cubs players.
  • Vote for best player not on my blacklist.*

*Blacklist includes Phillies, Mets, Cardinals, O's, and White Sox.

So instead of trying to get our boys in we should try and change the entire system so it's less of a popularity contest?  Good luck with that.

I like the system - if fans want Yankees and Sox, then they should be in

I just want MLB to stop trying to be all things to all people.  If they want the game to count for something, the fans shouldn't be voting, the managers should pick the best 25 from each league and do away with the "every team must be represented" rule.  If they want the fans and players to be involved, that's fine too, but remove the WS implications, make it mandatory for players selected to show up and at least stand out there for introductions, perhaps incentivise monetarily for the winning team and make it an exhibition that's fun for everybody.  Right now, it's none of those things.

Why can't the fans have a choice and have the games mean something? Baseball is entertainment, if WS homefield is screwed up because of a geriatric shortstop or third baseman, that's just how it goes

Again, I think it's trying to be all things to all people, that rarely turns out well.  You want your championship earned on the field.  You don't want the outcome of home field, something which has played a significant part in the WS the past couple of years, impacted by a fanbase mobilizing to get those that are less deserving to play a key role in the game.  I'm ok with the game "meaning something", but home field of the championship of the sport shouldn't be it.  Home field should be determined by regular season record.

Manager selections are every bit as ridiculous as fan selections, so it's not like that really changes anything. It's also possible for a team with 1 all star to end up in the series in which case it's hard to argue they 'earned home field' Regular season record could work if you had a balanced schedule, but, absent that, what does a better regular season record show?

Well, I thought we were moving back towards a more balanced schedule, or am I mindfacting that?  Over the course of 162 games, I'm comfortable giving the best record home field advantage.  Might not be a perfectly accurate representation, but it's going to be pretty close most of the time.  It's not often an average team will win 97 games, even in a bad division.

If a team gets it by a couple of games, but their opponent came from a better division, I don't see how that's a more fair solution than the all star game
