Just curious: How good a contract do people think Morse could get if he was a free agent this year?

Just having some fun.    :poke:

Trolling by proxy :lmao:

Linty, you are the easiest mark on this site, and he wasn't even aiming at you   Do you have an instant alert for the words Guzman, LaRoche, Desmond, and Espinosa? ;)

I am not ashamed to admit that I used to think Morse was overhyped Church 2.0, but I came around sometime between that thread and mid-2011.  Totally onboard the Morse train these days.

I knew what you were hinting at, I just didn't see any reason to comment on it until Linty got involved :P

I still stand by most of what I said in that thread, given the available information at the time.  And as with most heated arguments around here, people brought up a lot of things that were irrelevant to my point.

Well I wasn't going to agree with you, but the ?!?! put me over the top.

This made me laugh (responding to hammonds)

Also as soon as hammonds got involved, it became a discussion about Bernadina

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming

I'll bite. $12M/year, 5 years. Great 2011 but no long track record. Injuries early in his career.

5/60?  No way.  I like Morse and "believe" in his abilities now, but no team would take that kind of a risk on a 30 year old with such a short track record.

Cuddyer money - 3 years, $31.5 MM - [edit - maybe as high as $36Mm for 3 years].

He would have been the third best bat on the market - better than Beltran, Cuddyer, Willingham.

One step ahead of me. But I was thinking that he's better than Cudd but, yeah, five years is too long probably.

I wasn't trolled. tom said the same thing yesterday about Morse/Guzman then posted this smiley :run:

I was asking if he really said that a few years ago. I wasn't asking if he really thought Guzman was better now.

For those who need a refresher on the arbitration process, here's a comprehensive article by Thomas Gorman in BP open to non-subscribers.  This article originally ran 1/21/2005, but continues to be relevant.

Just messing with you. There are far easier marks on here than you. Too easy, in fact.

But don't bring up Dibs again or I'll junkpunch you.

Not as much as he would likely get in arbitration over a couple of years assuming he proves legit. There is still alot of skepticism around the league concerning Morse. Some team may have given him up to 3 years at decent money, but I bet his agent is betting that he will end up proving himself worthy of a more lucrative deal. Sometimes arbitration works out for guys. It is better that he push for a bigger number in arbitration, because a) it will keep his salary range elevated and b) the cheaper his salary, the more motivation to limit his playing time. Morse needs to be viewed as an everyday player and has to be play consistently to keep his numbers up. If they aren't committing to giving him the time worth a 5M dollar deal, then he should want to be traded to a team that will. So, I think his side is right for pushing the issue.

On the open market, I could see him get an annual salary in the 5-10 range, but doubt teams would want to commit to multiple years without a discount.

MDS the full contract isn't guaranteed until the end of spring training or thereabouts, I forget exactly when the cutoff is.  Before that it's only one eighth guaranteed, I believe

Quote
If the player is cut within 16 days before the season begins, he is entitled only to 30 days’ termination pay, or about one-sixth of his awarded salary. If the player is cut during spring training but after the 16th day before the season begins, he is entitled only to 45 days' termination pay.

agreed.   This might be an indication of what the FO is thinking in regards to Prince.
