At what point is it safe to say that a deal isn't going to be announced tonight so that I can call it a day?  Hopefully if anything happens it will be before the Wizards finish upsetting the Celts.

Only timetable I've heard is sometime this week and that was from the Nats' Enquirer.  I would feel pretty safe calling it a night at this point.

Right now. There was never any legit source that said it might be done tonight.

Nats Enquirer are guessing like everyone else.

Exactly.  Thus the reason I would feel safe calling it a night.

I need to program some sort of smart alert into my phone to wake me when the Nats sign a contract with at least one year over the $10 mil mark.

Interesting take from Mark Zuckerman.  He doesn't seem to think a deal will happen.

This bit from Mark Z's piece is exactly on point as to why it either won't happen, or if it does happen, that the chances of Zim getting re-signed go down dramatically (or payroll goes up to $150 mil which seems pretty unlikely):
---------

Consider that the Nationals already are paying Werth $20 million-plus in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Fielder would also cost that much, perhaps has much as $25 million per season over that same span. Zimmerman figures to command $20 million per season himself over at least seven or eight years. Do the math. Are the Nationals willing to devote $65 million a year to only three players for at least four years?

Guess how many MLB clubs currently do that? Three. The Yankees are committing anywhere from $68 million to $72 million in 2014, 2015 and 2016 to Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira. The Phillies will pay $65 million to Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Ryan Howard in 2013 (but only 2013). And the Angels are on the hook for $65 million in 2016 (but only 2016) to Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson and Jered Weaver.

That's it. The Red Sox don't have three players making $20 million per season at the same time. Neither do the Rangers, the Tigers, the Cubs, the Cardinals or the Dodgers.

So, Werthless really is an albatross?

Nothing is going to happen. Just a bunch of smoke and lies. We have LaRoche and Morse plus the LAC so there you go.

I've never wanted to have the "favorite" option for a poster more before in my life.

Starting to look that way.  Though given the Nats' increased revenue from MASN and how many asses Fielder, Harper, and a healthy Strasburg figure to put in the seats, they may still decide to get spend-happy.  Don't think the Lerners haven't noticed what winning did for the Capitals' bottom line.

And that doesn't factor in potential extensions for guys like J-Zimm, Stras, Danny, Gio, Storen, and Ramos.

This, to me, could be the dealbreaker.  I think the Nats can afford to extend Zim and bring in Fielder.  The two shouldn't be mutually exclusive.  But the roster has an excess of young talent that will also demand extensions at some point before Fielder's contract would be up.

Maybe they do sign Prince and trade Zim after this year.  If Rendon is as good as advertised, it could work out pretty well.

No Fielder, no Zim extension, $12 beers in 2012, and 4th in the NL East...it's all part of the plan!

To be fair, Werth is a lesser albatross...

Can they go ahead and increase ticket prices as well?

You all are being awfully negative considering we already have a guy who is supposed to be a decent power hitting lefty coming up in the minors.  If I could just remember his name... :couch:

Seriously though, Fielder would add a lot to the Nats but not getting him isn't the end of the world.  In the long run it may very well be a choice between Fielder or both Morse and Zim (I'll take Morse and Zim).  If the Nats sign Fielder, I'm trusting the front office to have worked out how they can keep Zim too.  I can imagine Zim would be open to a team-friendly extension that is backloaded to avoid paying too much while Fielder is under contract so this still isn't out of the question by any means.

And a new home uniform to fill up the team store with?  Maybe some garish flag motif and little $185 Werth onesies?

Can they go ahead and increase ticket prices as well?
