Bad news for the Rays with Price. He's a guy we should look in to cashing our prospects in on in a year or so.

Guessing Bernadina will be non-tendered then.

Bernadina hit 2.146 EXACTLY.  So a few days less service time and he doesn't make it???

If the rays are out of contention in august and we are somewhat in in I would have to think the Nats would make some calls.  He is good now but would also help add to the future of natstown.  The rays would probably also consider dealing him because of guys like Moore and hellickson along with guys in the minors

I doubt that Tampa will consider dealing him this year. He hasn't gotten expensive yet. Perhaps in a year or two, at which point we should certainly do whatever is necessary, so long as he is still performing at a high level. Guys like Price are the reason that I heavily doubt that prospects like Cole, Ray, and Purke will ever play in the big leagues for the Nats. They're exactly the guys that would be required in such a deal. I know it's a bit premature to start speculating what deals could be made in a year or two, but I'm guessing that we'll be not just contenders, but legit championship contenders at that point. Most Series contenders make a big deal to put them over the top, and Price could be that guy for us.

My logic was just to hold off on the pitching free agents this offseason and try and go for someone at the deadline as a reinforcement for our stretch run.  Gio Gonzalez could be another option because the a's are deep in young pitching.  I'd prefer price though

What's Gio's arby status? How much did he make this year?

If people can't stomach the thought of Wilson's walking hitters. You'd hate Gio.

This isn't a bad idea though Price would be very difficult to acquire.

Getting an innings eating type starter for a year (Marquis?) and waiting until some really good guys come on the market next year.  A Marquis-type may or may not be needed this year but he'd be good insurance in case any of the young pitchers falter.

We're getting to be as bad as Yankees fans assuming every small market team will rush to trade away their studs just because they are arbitration eligible

Probably some wishful thinking in there.

Still, for a team like the Nats which has by no means max-ed out its salary burden, having kept some powder dry until the farm system was rebuilt now positions them will to make the sorts of deals that could bring talent to DC that is not already past prime, like the majority of free agents are.  I would much rather make a trade for an ascending arb eligible talent than to sign the likes of Werth or Buerle off the free agent roles.

Will they actually pull the trigger on a deal?  We'll see.

These are the Rays we're talking about. I doubt that Oakland will deal Gio, but I think that Tampa eventually dealing Price a year or two down the road is a definite possibility. He's a Boras client, so he won't go for an infinite team options contract extension like Shields. Boras will have him go year to year in arby to maximize his earnings, and if Price continues to perform at a high level, he's going to get paid very handsomely, and Tampa may not want or be able to afford him.

so wilson's regular season numbers are meaningless?

yeah he's had a rough postseason, but he's still a solid pitcher.  he would be a great addition for us.

This

I don't want Wilson, but he's much more of a known commodity than Gio, and you can't judge him on a handful of post season starts

I did not see Bernie in the linked post.  Was he up for 114 days?  He had 2.032 going into the year.

I have him active for 2 days in April, 24 in May, 30 days in June, 29 in July, none of August, and up from 9/2 to the end of the season.

That looks like 85 prior to the end of the season stretch.  Season ended on 9/28. That looks like he's just short, unless I did my math wrong or he gets credit for extra days in September.

With Bernie and Clip, veterans who have been up and down for a number of years, they are tough to manage for super 2 status.  For JZ, and next year Storen, didn't they kind of give them early call  ups so they'd qualify for super 2 kind of as reward for being easy signings?

He was on the list originally but his name has been removed.
