yep, they could sign no one important, extend both Zimmerman(n)s and the offseason would be a success

Once again we're going to butt heads on this one.

If the Nats signed no one to the roster but re-signed JZ and RZ... you'd consider it a success?

no one important- I'd expect them to sign maybe a Coco Crisp or resign a Wang (basically no one long term), but if they pass on Wilson, Sabathia, Reyes and extend JZ and especially RZ yes- right now the team should be competitive next year and making a push the year after- if RZ isn't extended, that window closes

I agree with this. I think its necessary to add the piece we need whether its a stud pitcher or a decent CF or both. Thats a success. Resigning the Zimmermenn is just a move that's dumb not to do.

I agree with this.  The team will be contending for a wild card spot if they do what you outlined.  They also should be primed for a real serious run for several years after that and not weighed down with too many broken down old guys or underperformers on long term deals.

I just don't subscribe to the stand pat theory.

If you're not making moves to constantly improve your team, you're falling behind.

and if you make too many moves, you're constrained by a payroll filled with over paid broken down players (see mets).

I am absolutely certain that some rather large pieces will be added this offseason; specifically, Edwin Jackson and a CF.

Stop tying over paid players to what I'm saying.

Not every move has to be a mega move.

It's the last defense of the LANC. Take whatever anyone says about adding players to the team, turn it into a strawman, claim that the payroll should be 300 million so we'll stop nagging, rinse and repeat.

Not every player turns out to be Jayson Werth. Some guys live up to their contracts... and some contracts are very affordable.

Wilson, Sabathia, Reyes will almost certainly end up over paid, and I said major moves, but you seem to be pretty good at the straw man thing yourself

First you claimed I wanted Strasburg re-signed. You'll never see a post where I wrote "re-sign Strasburg", now you're claiming I want only big money players to sign with the Nats.

Would I want CJ Wilson or CC? Absolutely. Do I demand the Nats do it or be called cheap? Hell no.

Just because you're content with the Nationals sitting on their collective ass and only re-signing players doesn't mean we all feel that way, or should feel that way.

you're right agreeing that you want Zimmerman and Strass extended in no way implies that you want Strass extended

I would agree with you on this most of the time but if you have a young team like the Nats do, I think waiting for them to develop can be a smart strategy. Having said that, I would still like a leadoff CF and a veteran FA pitcher. Wang would be OK for the latter, IMO.

Wilson, Sabathia, Reyes will almost certainly end up over paid...

Nearly every free agent ends up going to the highest bidder, so the other 29 teams would consider the player overpaid.  The exceptions of course are guys who give up a home town discount, guys who are chasing a World Series ring, and in some cases guys who think they can make more endorsement money in a big market.

my hopes for the off-season:
- extend Z&Z
- sign a solid starter - Jackson-type or trade for Wandy
- add another arm to the bullpen
- add a lead-off / OBP guy

I don't think it's realistic that we'll get Pujols, Fielder, CC, or CJ so if we do, it's a pleasant surprise.  I'd overpay for Pujols.
