Rizzo wants Upton, because getting him would make signing Zimmerman to an extension easier. it's not about building a winning team, or even a competitive one, it's about sucking up to his key players. If his poster boy is happy, the chances of him remaining the Nats poster boy are greatly increased.

Even though Denard Span makes more short and long term, as well as fiscal sense, Rizzo wheeling and dealing with blinders on and is more interested in making Zimm happy.

Ken - over the past + years since Bowden left, every friend of Zimmerman has been traded or let walk by Rizzo.  Kearns, Johnson, Dunn, and Willingham.  We can fantasize about the team pulling in Upton and Cuddyer to RZ happy, but I do not think Rizzo does it unless he likes the beef.

I just learned that the Tigers have interest in #Nats RHP Jason Marquis. Not sure who the Nats want in return. #MLB

The Nationals should want Ben Guez. If the Nats can solve CF by trading Marquis what I would do can only be described in the uncensored forum.

He looks OK.  Better than anything we have right now.  How's his glove?

Not quite sure of the love for Guez. Below average runner, 24 year old basically repeating AAA and having only a decent season.

Don't see how he's anything better than Bernadina.

Not that I expect a lot for Marquis - ill take anything for him. Just wouldn't expect that kid to provide anything to our big club.

And that's precisely the thinking that'll get us another Aaron Thompson.  :spaz:

When I watched him in the DWL he made some nice catches, had good reads, and ran down nearly every ball hit to the outfield. He was also playing next to Karim Garcia in right and a fat Yankees prospect in left. He is blocked in the Tigers system and not rated highly on any prospect boards. It might be the Nationals could get him as a throw in along with a guy like Furbush.

Good lord. Pretty soon...we're gonna have to start calling them the National League All-star team.

If all it takes is Dominic Brown, they should go get Pence.  Brown has a chance to be as good or better than Pence, but that's all it is - a chance.  And Pence is still pretty young.  The Phillies might need that extra batter now that the GIants have Beltran.  And the Giants might not be done dealing, either.

Is Guez just a CF?  Because the Tigers have had something of a shuffle in the OF the past two yearsa nd i don't recall him ever being up with the team.

Red Sox are getting concerned that Buchholz will be out for the year.  Francona says it is not just muscle strains in his back.  They are supposed to be making a heavy push for Bedard, with Harden and Guthrie also in the picture and Ubaldo a long shot and Kuroda more in the NYY sights.

Quote
The uncertainty surrounding Buchholz appears to have put the Sox in a position of needing to bolster their rotation. Manager Terry Francona acknowledged yesterday that the righthander’s injury could be more serious than initially thought.

“Oh, boy. The best way I think I can answer that is that it’s not been the simplest muscle strain. That’s pretty obvious,’’ he said.

I've not seen any mention of Marquis in the Globe, although it is looking like they may have holes at 4 and 5 in the rotation (Miller, Wakefield).

Bedard has pitched in the AL East before. And pitched well.
