The key question revolves around Werth.  The second half of this season could really be good IF he starts hitting.

Comparative dates on which the Nationals have notched their 46th win, each season:

2005 - 29th June (77th match of season)
2011 - 10th July (92nd match)
2006 - 27th July (102nd match)
2010 - 31st July (104th match)
2007 - 31st July (106th match)
2008 - 22nd August (129th match)
2009 - 27th August (128th match)

2011 and 2005 have been getting closer on these reports.  The Nationals' playoff chances in 2011 may depend on what they do in the remainder of July.  Here's what happened in 2005:

Won-Loss 2005
July post All Star game  4-13
August                       13-15
Sept-Oct 2                 12-17
Total post All Star       29-45

Win# 46 for the '05 Overachievers was the second of a six-match winning streak (sweeps of Pirates home and Cubs away) - their last real run of the season (after the break the best they could muster were two four-game streaks). If the current Nats stay on anything approaching their June form - admittedly easier said than done with the long away swing coming up (Atlanta will be a killer - winners of 10 of their last 11 at home - and that Marlins/Mets/Braves homestand immediately following isn't going to be a cakewalk either) - once they notch win# 50 the gap will start closing, since after their 50th win the '05 edition really lost the plot: once that six-win streak ended they would drop 19 of their next 25.

Back to the present: really nice way to go into the break yesterday with that win.
