When will decent veterans like Jerry Hairston Jr, Jason Marquis, Matt Capps, etc get smart and realize if they come and don't suck then they'll be traded?

It's worked so far but I wouldn't want to sign with a team I was pretty sure would trade me.

Matt Capps probably didn't have any other teams willing to let him close- these deals work both ways- on a team like the Nats they get a chance to showcase themselves and maybe get a better deal whereas on another team they may have been middle relief or end of the bench

Capps was coming off a non-tender after a crappy year. It was either sign here to be our closer or sign with the Cubs to be their setup man. He chose us.

It doesn't mean much since its not anything but two mets players said they wouldn't be surprised if Reyes signed with the Nats. (mlbtr_)

Of all the big FA's that could sign with the Nats, Reyes would probably be the best fit for the Nats but I could easily see that blowing up in our faces and being stuck with two crappy $100 million dollar players on the roster.

With the injuries Reyes has had the past couple of years, no way he gets a Werthian deal.

I wonder what it would take to get Reyes here.  I'd expect we'd have to compete with Philly who could really use him.

With the depth (or lack thereof) at SS especially on big market teams, no way he gets that little

He may get a similar AAV, but I don't see any way he gets 7 years.  I could see a 4 year 18 or 19 per, which, as best I could tell would give him the highest AAV for a SS.

The Philles, Red Sox, Mets (say what you will about rebuilding/smart contracts, they charge NYC prices for their seats and sponsorships and will be under tremendous pressure to improve), and Giants all could be in the market  (not to mention the yankees with a declining Jeter) and that may mean he gets to dictate terms

If a thirty-two year old Werth can get a seven year deal, a twenty-eight year old Reyes almost certainly will.

That's fine, but you can only dictate so much.  I don't think he gets anywhere close to what Werth got, at least not in terms of length of contract.  I'm not even sure I see him exceeding what Tulo got in AAV, but he might.

Tulo was under team control

I'd be willing to wager that we'll hear talk of Fielder wanting a ten year deal. I doubt that he'll get one, but the idea will be out there.

Wait, with Zim at short and Pujols at third, where the heck are we gonna play Reyes?

CF. It'll fill up our CF position AND he'll be the leadoff guy.

Silly, Pujols is our leadoff-hitting center fielder.

I agree with all of this.  If they do get him, maybe they trade Desmond plus pitching for a CF.

If Reyes was so injured this past season how did he qualify for the batting title?

He's had years of injury problems. Specifically hamstring problems. For a speed guy, that's dangerous.

Over the last two seasons Reyes has played in 259 games and had 1189 plate appearances. Ryan Zimmerman in that time has played in 243 games with 1043 plate appearances. So why are we fine with giving one guy nearly $200 million, but not giving another just over $100 million?
