Dibble seems sort of Palinish, then.
Good call on this one. Let me paraphrase:

FP is like Quayle. Bland, no presonality but has more than serviceable knowledge of the issues at hand.
Dibble is like Palin. All style and no substance. Either you love them or hate them because they're out there.

One great benefit of going to Nationals Park is not having to listen to Santangelo on the tube.

I can't tell who's being serious and who's joking in this thread.

I don't think I've ever heard Santangelo refer to Jayson Werth by just his last name. He seems to call him by his full name exclusively.

He's the Nats version of Brett Favre?

Seemed like it. FP said "Jaysonwerth" at least six times during Werth's last at bat, and he said it just like that; like it's one word.

I haven't been able to take the recent broadcasts, but does he do this with all the other players? Or any of them, for that matter? Or is it just Werth... I'm sorry, JaysonWerth, that he's pulling this with? If he calls everyone else by their surname, and Werth by both, well, that's just plain freaky and bizarre. Seems to me Santangelo, while not exactly a downgrade considering who we had before, Ray Knight and Dibble, isn't a step in the right direction. He has his positive attributes, notably keen insight into the game and the ability to, at times, give some legitimate and deep knowledge on the game and certain strategies. However, his personality, color commentary ability with certain quirks and flaws, never mind his chemistry with Bob, seem to be definitively lacking and sadly the types of flaws that are intrinsic to his personality and speaking and not the type of stuff that will evolve and improve over time.

Definitely a disappointment that he's not working out all that well. Unfortunately, I'm afraid he's just good enough that, after Dibble, we will be stuck with him as long as he wants the gig.

You guys must be watching something different, because FP has some great corny jokes about how he was a sucky ballplayer and he knows more about pitching than dibble. His comments actually have a lot of insight.

Unfortunately they sound like they've been filtered through the boredom filter.

Does Brett Farve have a high pitched voice ?

Santangelo does not have a good voice for broadcasting.  Dibble's was much better.

Yeah, vocal coaching wouldn't hurt, but he's far smarter and more pleasant than the low-voiced goofball we had before.

I liked the co-ordination between FP's commentary and the camera work on Werth's lead off third at the end.   Somebody in the truck had their head in the game.   Well done ...

he's fine, I wish we had someone who would jump all over carpenter for the veteran crap- Stairs and Nix are not veteran leaders, they are over the hill bench players lucky to have jobs in the majors

From the games I've watched, it seems like he does it with everybody.  "And Rick Ankiel will be hacking here."  "Wilson Ramos calling a great game for Jason Marquis."  "It's good to have a veteran like Pudge Rodriguez."  "Now watch how Ian Desmond gets behind this ball."  etc.

Yeah, really, I have no idea where some of these guys are coming from on FP. He does not have an idiosynchratic personality and voice like some announcers. And that's just what I like. That wears over 162 games. I like my broadcasters on the plain side, IOW.:~)

The key is that the dude knows the game. Dibble was a numbskull. I can't believe anyone would defend his knowledge or analysis of the game. You could make the case he was entertaining if you are into loud, insensitive windbags.

OMG, Dibble's voice was anything but smooth. Nasaly to the extreme. And he was famous for his grunting during plays.

I don't know if anyone else has observed this, but FP harps a lot on shifts and how bad they are, just like Dibble's focus on throwing fastballs (which he passed on to Carpenter apparently). Anyway, I still like FP... he provides a lot of good info. His voice doesn't seem that suited to broadcasting, but whatever, I'll get used to it with time.

He harped on shifts last night because the Brewers seemed to go into one with every batter.  I don't recall him focusing much on shifts in other games.

Bingo, and he has talking intensively about the positioning of individual players in the shift. I learned a lot.

Thankfully, the Brewers didn't learn from their positioning mistakes after nine innings. They continued the nuttiness while Werth was on base.

I remember when the team had Don Sutton. Personally, Rob Dibble was my kind of guy and I enjoyed his commentary. Santangelo is pretty good, he's nice and sweet and all that jazz, but I can bear listening to him, whereas with Carpenter I don't get the feeling that he is genuine. Carpenter, although I would feel strange if he wasn't commentating on a Nats game, seems to 'show-nice', where as Dibble was able to speak his mind and entertain the audience. I enjoyed listening to Dibble, you never knew what he was going to say next.

It's all subjective I guess, but Dibble ruled

Grunting during plays! Thats what I liked about Dibble, it wasn't like there was an announcer up there, it was like there was a fan. Like someone stuck someone from the sports bar and put them next to Carpenter. It's sports, it's fun, I like a commentater who can show some emotion and get into what he's watching. I got the feeling that Dibble acted on the microphone just like he acted off of it, and I felt that was refreshing.

And that's what people hated about :dibbs:  He was "unprofessional" in the booth.  Saying "we" when referring to the team really miffed some people, as did rooting for the players and clapping, etc.

Personally, I didn't mind him but I don't mind FP either.  I hated Sutton.

No, thanks. If I wanted to listen to some schmo from the sports bar blabbering about something he doesn't know squat about, I would go to the sports bar (or come to this board:~)) I'm looking for much more from my announcers. I want analysis, insight, entertainment, polish, etc. Dibble was none of those.
