You are basing his "dogging it" on his statements which are based on his flawed perception of himself and how he perceives his value related to others. I think that is a mistake.

If a pitcher with a social anxiety disorder works in a market is another question. There are so many distractions around these players it is crazy.

I have defended the baseless attacks against him, but "I didn't try that hard because the team was losing", that ain't anxiety. FLop was molested by a male relative, and that is awful, but I still think he's a jerk for not trying hard.

Again your only basis is his flawed self perception. Ask a few of these questions in a comfortable environment and the disorder starts speaking.

  • Do you think the second half reflected your best effort? What happened Zach?
  • Do you think you should have listened to the coaches more? Did you let them down?
  • Did your teammates or coaches give you as sense you were not a productive part of the team?
  • Is it hard to prepare each day when the team is focused on the future?
  • You didn't do your best every day. Isn't that true Zach?

As far as I am concerned, I'm taking this interview with a grain of salt unless there is a transcript.

Yeah, ok, sounds like the reporter was putting him down.

His performance in the 2nd half supports his statement as well, it's not just his words.

I have no idea what the reporter asked but to identify distortions you need both the questions and the answers.

His performance in the 2nd half supports his statement as well, it's not just his words.

Or his poor self perception derives from his poor performance.

We were talking about leadership recently - Rizzo addressed that topic with MLBN radio - http://www.federalbaseball.com/2011/2/25/2013567/washington-nationals-gm-mike-rizzo-on-mlb-network-radio-on-jayson

--------
Mike Rizzo: "The players you bring in have to be able to hit and play defense and run the bases too...I feel that we've got guys who have ability...Jayson [Werth], certainly, part of the reason we brought him in here was his leadership qualities, and his winning attitude and his postseason experience, but he was mostly brought in here to solidify the middle of the lineup, to be a two-way player for us and to be an impact guy on the team performance-wise. So you try to have that mixture of all the intangibles: good player, good person on and off the field, good teammate, rally the troops type of guy and a guy that can mentor the young players, but if the performance isn't there it kind of lessens the value of players."
