Redskins season over: for Nats, now or never
« on: January 03, 2011, 02:35:14 am »
Subject says it. Yes, I love the Caps, but baseball and football are the major sports. This is the time for the Nats to show some improvement, or else Spring Training will be covered less than off-season work-outs and The Great QB Question.

I'm willing to give Rizzo some trust, but if he does not get LaRoche at 1b plus a starter who is better than Marquis, this will be a dismal season.

And, I add, Nyjer Morgan does not belong on a major league team.

Counting the pluses and minuses:

+ Werth

- Dunn or replacement

- Willlingham, traded for a couple of guys who have never produced in the majors.

- No SP (forget "top rotation" or ace" or whatever...how about adequate?)

Not looking good on 2 January. Here's hoping.

The unfortunate bit is more and more folks seem to think we won't get LaRoche as Rizzo refuses to go over two, LaRoche refuses to settle, and he'll accept a one year deal with a winner and try again next year. Of course I can't believe it can happen, and I can't imagine he won't sign here, but the way this offseason has gone? Who knows.

As far as starters go, that likely ain't gonna happen. There are so few left, it just isn't happening. Most damnable of all is likely going to be Maya's DWL season. As well as he did, that just might be the final straw that stops us from signing another starter. Bottom line, I would be ready to be disappointed, and then be genuinely thrilled and shocked when they do sign LaRoche or a starter.

The 1B situation is the biggest issue.  If we end up with Morse and a platoon partner at 1B, it takes Morse out of the outfield mix.

That would leave us Bernadina, Morgan, and Ankiel for CF and LF.  I have as much faith in Bernie's pecs and abs and other physical gifts as anyone, but I'm not comfortable at all with going into the season with no backup plan for him if he stinks it up.

On the larger issue - yeah I agree completely.  The Nats need to become relevant soon.  Each losing season makes it that much more difficult to build a fanbase and generate some buzz in this city.  If they're not in the race in July, forget about McNabb - people will start caring about the backup left guard and the 4th wide receiver before giving the Nats any attention.

Most damnable of all is likely going to be Maya's DWL season.

If so, get ready for another 100+ loss season.
