why not?

to be productive at the major league level, a first baseman needs to hit far better than a catcher

wow, 2 outs in the top of the 7th tonight (last inning of game because of DH) with 1 runner on base down by 1, they pinch hit with Derek Norris and he clobbers a 2-Run HR to give the Sens the lead.

So clutch. Now batting .246 as well. 9 homers

Problem with a "last 10 games" for Norris is it takes just a couple of o-fers to make his hot streak fall back in line with his season totals.  Season - .231 /.379 / .496, last 10 through 6/10, .233 / .368 / .533.  Can we do ourselves a favor and not talk about batting average for this guy?  Anyone who gets on at a .370 clip with .500 SLG is doing well.

catcher batting leadoff? if he can get on at close to a .400 clip I don't care if he waddles around the bases

He's got 5 SB on the year so he's no Bengie Molina.

He's actually quite fast for a catcher.

Scouts all had their stop watches on him and he hit a ground out and they were going crazy on how fast his split time was to 1st.

Linty, I know it all depends on who else is in the line-up, but where would you pencil Norris in the line-up?  #2?  #5?  #6?

I think he's best used in 2 or 5/6 spot.

Don't think he has top end power to hit 4th.

My ideal lineup for 2013

1. Leadoff CF (not yet a Nat)/ Lombo-2B
2. Werth (1B)
3. Zimm
4. Harper
5. Espinosa 2B/SS
6. Norris
7. Hood - LF
8. Desmond/CF

Why would Werth be playing first base in two years? I really hope that doesn't happen.

for the money Werth's getting paid, I don't think he has an elite enough bat to justify a spot at first

Where else would they put him, if Hood develops into a major leaguer?

trade hood? When you have a guy making as much as Werth, their spot really isn't in question

Norris continues to be very puzzling. 2/27 (.074) over his last 10 games but with 11 BBs to 10 Ks.

His season BA is down to .209. But his OBP and SLG are still good.

Dunn has had those kinds of numbers in the past.  In 2006, he hit .234, OBP was .365, OPS was .855.  And he had almost 200 k's.  That was probably Dunn's worst season (until this year so far).

If we can get that with good defense behind the plate, we'd probably have an all star, though.

From Jason Parks, BP, an article on catching prospects in which he puts Norris in a middle tier:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=14261

Quote
TCF: Big power potential, big on-base ability, and enough defense to stick at the position make Norris a valuable commodity in the prospect world. I’m not sold on his superstar potential, but the aforementioned combo of power and patience give him an offensive ceiling few on this list can boast. His hit tool is a little suspect, so it will be interesting to see how the power and patience [read: ability to draw walks] are affected at the highest level. But the 22-year-old still has room to improve and projects to become a first-division starter at the major-league level.
