Back to Norris though.

Until he proves me otherwise, I still think he's the next Mike Piazza.

I'd be okay with that.

I think a conservative hitting comp might be Napoli.

Let's hope the team doesn't trade him for an aging outfielder with an inflated contract.

Did Piazza ever have a defensive skill? Norris is getting mentioned for his arm on top of his bat.

He was defensive about his sexual orientation.

I thought by the middle of his career Piazza was considered adequate?

Maybe as far as not letting every third pitch hit the back stop. His problems was that you could run at will on him. Adam Dunn wouldn't have have feared running on him.

Defense seem to be a lagging indicator for scouts (meaning decent expectations/performance for a player to play premium positions tend to stick far too long while poor expectations/performance also stick far too long). People are just starting to understand that Torri Hunter can't play CF anymore, 5 years after he started costing runs out there. Meanwhile, I think for Norris that first year where he was just starting to play the position and had tons of passed balls has really stuck in the minds of scouts.

But last year, Norris through out 51% of baserunners, and dropped his passed balls to 1 for every 11.5 games from one every 3.5 games. That's not quite Wilson Ramos defense, but it's not far off. Plus, Keith Law, who tends to be more conservative than most scouts in terms of projecting players to stay at premium defensive positions, was pretty definitive in projecting him to stay behind the plate.

Overall, I think it's far more likely that this will go the opposite way - that Norris' defense will actually turn into a positive - than that he will have to move from C. His improvement has been pretty rapid considering his inexperience at the position.

Sorry. But yeah, I agree.

We are all missing the obvious:

Derrik Norris must be the grandson of Chuck Norris, so I heard that he once hit a 5 run homer.

I'm looking forward to seeing Harper do that to lead off an inning... ;)

I saw Norris has been working with Eckstein on his swing.

After what he did to Dunn's approach, that worries me.

Leaving one slightly higher, so they get the nice two-level effect with a little path running down the middle.

Back on topic.

Is it possible when Derek Norris hits the majors he could be our starting catcher but maybe once every 7 to 10 days maybe get put at 1B or maybe even snuck out to LF? It would be awesome if he could do that and gives Ramos an extra day here and there on the field. That would be an elite catcher duo assuming Ramos doesn't get moved for a solid starting pitcher.

Or maybe we move Norris for a really good #2/#3........

It would be really nice if Jesus Flores ever got to the point he could be trusted durability wise as a backup catcher.

For someone who is better at league equivalents for stats, I know Norris looks like he'll have a great bat for a catcher, but will his bat play at first or left?

Norris's OBP seems pretty elite for any position, and (while remaining aware of SSS) it looked like he was getting some of his power back towards the end of last season, so I'd assume so.  I need to get back into the baseball swing of things so I know these things without looking them up...

Norris' bat looks plenty good to me - wherever we play him.  I agree with those that argue that he has a lot more value as a good hitting catcher and I understand the sentiment that we should cash in on that value in a trade (though I'm not sure I agree with the second part of that).

Norris looked mobile enough to play LF to me when I watched him in AFL - though I only saw him running the bases so maybe I'm way off on that.  I think I've mentioned the name before, but Nick Swisher is someone I think of as having below average athleticism for his position but is still a net positive for his team.  Norris definitely has the arm for the outfield.  He probably wouldn't be all that different from Willingham.

By the time he gets here, though, we'll probably have Werth and Harper manning the OF corners.  Plus we'll have Pujols at 1B.

It's refreshing to have this kind of problem after so many years in the desert with JimBo as our guide.
