Mike Rizzo gets 5 year extension, promotion
« on: October 19, 2010, 01:46:26 pm »
Quote
The Nationals have given Mike Rizzo a five-year contract extension and promoted him to executive vice president of baseball operations and and general manager.

Rizzo, who was named permanent GM in August 2009, is due to hold a conference call with reporters at 2 p.m.

More to come...

UPDATE AT 1:43 P.M. -- Statement from managing principal owner Ted Lerner, who apparently made the decision to give Rizzo the extension: "Mike Rizzo is unquestionably one of the best baseball minds in the game. He has a unique ability to see player talent for what it is, what it can be and how it fits into building a team. Mike has been one of the architects of the rebuilding of the entire Nationals player system, from scouting to player development to big league signings. We believe the talent foundation we are establishing on and off the field will make the Nationals one of baseball's most exciting teams over the next several seasons."

What exactly does this mean for the team?

Probably did it to give Rizzo a raise and fend off any other teams interested in him.

Why was this necessary?

Depends on how you define "necessary" I guess.

it shows stability and trust in the organization.  Similar to a college football or basketball coach getting a ridiculous extention so that he can say to a recruit and his family they're going be there for the long haul and has the contract to prove it.  Basically the same thing.  When he's talking with FA's he can say he's here for the long haul, there isn't going to be any major philosophy shifts while he (the player) is here.  It's more for show than anything.

Somedays I think Rizzo is the perfect example of the Peter Principle, other days I think he's a wonderful GM.

Today, I'm not so sure how I feel.

I bet GM's are paid less than middle relievers. He can be fired at any time with little to no cost impact.

this seems like it is a positive in the sense that it establishes Rizzo at an executive level that not only helps him hold more authority in the org but also among other teams and agents. It could be a negative in the sense that we know Rizzo cares about winning for his own career rep, but with a five year extension, the could be buying a guy willing to defer winning.

i was thinking it could be good beacuse now he can more freely disagree with ownership and do his own thing, because he has 5 years of pay to fall back on in case he gets fired

There would be a buyout clause in any contract like this I imagine.

The Dunn thing becomes even more interesting now, given that allegedly Rizzo wanted to deal Dunn but was vetoed. Assuming that was true, it makes one question whether the situation would have been different if Rizzo had held this position then (meaning have the role with no Kasten around.) Seems like something that would have come up in conversations during the discussions. But it also puts Rizzo in an interesting position regarding the Dunn negotiations at this point. Dunn's agent: "Note to self, guy who wanted to trade my client now has more authority."

The reason I now have to question whether that whole story is 100% accurate is because of where the Nats find themselves. If they aren't going to sign Dunn, not trading him looks pretty stupid. It doesn't matter if someone comes up with a counter argument that may have some merit, in baseball circles, settling for a sandwich pick will be viewed as boneheaded. By leaking the idea that Rizzo was overruled by Kasten but now has a better role gives him some cover.

Didn't Adam Dunn finish a Type B free agent?

If so, that hurts...

Yeah, and it also makes it really dumb for not dealing him

Dan Hudson or Dayan Viciedo. One could be a Nat right now.

After Peavy got hurt, they weren't going to trade Hudson without also getting a pitcher in return... so you can squash that rumor.

Since when is this final/official?  I thought the word a few weeks ago was that it would be extremely unlikely to play out that way.

In my opinion, Viciedo sucks. Career minor league walk rate of 3%, K rate of right around 20%, can't field worth a lick. Basically, he's Wily Mo Pena all over again.
