Drafting from HS or college?
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:29:55 pm »
This is a debate I like, which way should we go more often or I should say in the earlier rounds? Isn't it fair to say that Rizzo has gone College route lately? i think drafting hs’ers high in the draft was a mistake (Bowden era). I’m being picky but not much of them have lived up to the hype. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but you see that it's harder to project hs'ers.Norris looks like a tremendous pick though and I’m not ready to give up yet on Marrero and Burgess. But I prefer the recent approach of Rizzo, I prefer college players simply because they are easier to project and more mature. If we didnt draft Harper this season, I would have preferred us to take gamble on HS players but I don’t think it’s worth anymore. However, I’m mostly talking for bats but for pitchers, I still don’t know, some teams really do grab good pitchers out of HS. Pitchers are harder to project even if they come out of College, is Detwiler doing as good as expected? I doubt it. Prospect development is a long process in any sport, so patience is the key ( i.e Ian Desmond). Whatever I say or whatever we say, we won't have the choice to draft HS players each year. However, drafting high caliber college prospects early on and after that drafting overslot or '' signability'' picks in the other rounds seems like a sharp strategy because if you throw the money you will sign these signability picks. I'm just bored, I don't have much knowledge and english isn't really my language and I don't understand baseball as a sport as well. I couldn't tell you for example what kind of pitches a pitcher have or other kind of stuff I'm just the average joe but so many things have changed in this organization it's hard to keep up. I was an ex expos fan ( live in Montreal), wish I could go to Washington some day to watch a game. Might be possible in a few years haha.

PS: Brian really made a nice summary on the topic on his blog....kudos to him.

College if you're thin in the major like the Nats.

H.S. if you've got talent to spare.

Best way of course, is to mix and match high floor/low ceiling types and tough signs HS kids with a high ceiling.

If you've got good player development, it doesn't matter, IMO.  It's the preference of the organization.  My thought is, in general, give me the best players possible.  Combine that with good development and a little luck, then you're usually going to be in good shape whether you go the HS or College route.

Draft the best player available. If that is college, draft him (Strasburg). If it's Juco, Draft him (Harper). If it's High School, Draft him (Justin Upton).
